Obituary of Cecelia Welch
Cecelia Ditonto Welch, 100, formerly of 9 McDaniel Ave. Jamestown, passed away at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday (June 15, 2010) in the Heritage Park Rehab and Skilled Nursing Facility.
An area resident for most of her life she was born March 8, 1910 in Irving, PA a daughter of the late Alessandro and Josephine Cecchini Ditonto.
She was a retired employee of the Sanitary Wiping Cloth Company where she worked for 15 years. In earlier years she had worked for the former Jamestown, National and Empire Worsted Mills.
She was a communicant of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Lakewood where she was also a member of the Altar and Rosary Society. While a resident at Heritage Park she took part in many activities including the Red Haters of Heritage Park.
She will be remembered as a loving and caring mother and grandmother who loved to cook and bake for her family. She also loved to spend time knitting and crocheting. She was a childhood friend of Lucille Ball while they were growing up.
Surviving is a daughter Frances E. (Pete) D'Angelo of Jamestown, a son Joseph B. Welch of Lakewood, seven grandchildren Johanna L. Ramsey of Centerville, OH, Peter C. D'Angelo of Lockport, NY, Mark A. D'Angelo of Belleville, MI, Joseph T. Welch of Lakewood, NY, John K. Welch of Chenango, NY, Maureen E. Welch, Samuel T. Welch both of Panama, NY, 15 great grandchildren, 5 great great grandchildren, a brother Benjamin (Bennie) Ditonto of Lakewood, NY and a sister Estelle Francia of CA.
Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband John F. Welch whom she married September 8, 1933 and who died July 7, 1975, two brothers Lawrence and Anthony Ditonto and three sisters Mary Destro, Katherine Floccare, Linda Slemmons.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:00 a.m. Saturday in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Lakewood. Msgr. Joseph M. Dowdell, pastor will be celebrant. Burial will be in the Holy Cross Cemetery.
Friends will be received from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Friday in the Lind Funeral Home where a Christian Wake Service will be led at 1:45 p.m. Friday.
