Obituary of Mildred S. Martin
Mildred Shamel Martin, 91, formerly of Fairwood Drive Lakewood, died at 12:20 p.m. Wednesday (June 23, 2010) in the Lutheran Home and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born April 5, 1919 in East Concord, NY the daughter of the late Howard and Carrie Burgess Shamel.
Mildred was a 1938 graduate of the Griffith Institute in Springville, NY and received her BS degree from Ithaca College in 1942, majoring in Speech, Drama, and English.
For many years, she taught English at Liberty High School in Liberty, NY and at Alden High School in Alden, NY. She also taught Speech at Clarence Central High School in Clarence, NY. In later years, she sold Real Estate in the Jamestown Area.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday school and was a member of the Esther Circle Meeting Group. She was also a member of the Eastern Star of Springville, NY #441; Creche; Lakewood Rod and Gun Club; Moon Brook Country Club; Chautauqua Lake Yacht Club; American Association of University Women (AAUW); Jamestown General Hospital Auxiliary; WCA Hospital Auxiliary; YWCA; Jamestown Little Theater; a life member of the Mozart Club; and she served on the Board of Managers at the Warner Home in Jamestown. She volunteered with the Cancer Drive; Easter Seal Drive; Community Chest; and with speech correction for mentally disabled children. Mildred served as president of the Chautauqua County Medical Association Auxiliary; Jamestown Medical Association Auxiliary; and as secretary of the Moon Brook Country Club's Women's Association. Her hobbies include, bowling, bridge, golf, cooking, needlepoint, and she was an avid reader and she enjoyed traveling and spending time with her grandchildren.
Surviving are a daughter, Pamela Wilson (Jeff) of Lakewood; two sons, Ansel R. "Rob" Martin Jr. (Patty) of Jamestown; Bruce T. Martin (Ina Fenster) of Natick, MA; four grandchildren, Adrienne R. Martin and Jacob H. Martin both of Jamestown; Hannah C. Martin and Zachary E. Martin both of Natick.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Ansel R. "Buck" Martin whom she married June 28, 1943 and who died July 17, 2001; and a brother, Harold Shamel.
A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday June 26, 2010 in Bellinger Chapel of First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Thomas A. Sweet, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery.
Friends will be received from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday June 25, 2010 in the Lind Funeral Home.
