Obituary of Sebastian Calanni

Sebastian "Busty" Calanni, 84, of 47 Tower St. died at 12:18 a.m. Saturday (March 13, 2010) in his home surrounded by his family. He was born June 11, 1925 in Jamestown, a son of the late Russell and Lillian Vullo Calanni. A Technical Sergeant in the U.S. Army, he served during WW II in the 303rd Infantry Medical Detachment in France, Belgium, Holland, Checkoslovakia and Germany. He was awarded the Bronze Star by Brig. General John Halsey for heroic action during the fall of Germany. Following the fall, he served in occupied Japan. In earlier years, Busty owned and operated the former Haymarket Caf in Brooklyn Square. Later as a teamster, he worked as a truck driver and mechanic for several area firms. He was a member of St. James Catholic Church and a life member of the Henry Mosher Post 638 American Legion. He also belonged to the Lakewood Rod & Gun Club, Liberty Athletic Club and the Moose. Busty was a devoted family man who loved sitting on his deck and spending time with his family. He had a great sense of humor and loved his garden, flowers and bird watching. An excellent cook, he also looked forward to his yearly canning. He will be sadly missed by all. Surviving are his wife, Perscilla Latona Calanni, whom he married July 26, 1946; four children: Kathleen (Bruce) Anderson of Jamestown, Russell Calanni of Stockton, Perscilla Calanni Cosme of Jamestown and Ethelyn (David) Supples of Jamestown; five grandchildren: Kimberly (Aaron) Scoma of Jamestown, Russell (Michelle) Calanni Jr. of Belfast, NY, Dayna (Christopher) McCumber of Elgin, Ontario, Megan Calanni of Stockton and Lindsey Calanni of Jamestown; and four great-grandchildren: Nolan Scoma and Katherine, Derek and Emma Calanni. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Clement "Torch" Calanni and Russell "Babe" Calanni; and a daughter-in-law, Kathleen Calanni who died March 23, 2009. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday in St. James Catholic Church. Burial will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday in the Lind Funeral Home, where a Christian Wake Service will be held at 1:45 p.m.
