Obituary of Wallace M. Carlson

Wallace M. "Wally" Carlson, 90, of 13 Willow Ave. died Monday, February 1, 2010 at the VA Medical Center in Erie, PA. He was born April 24, 1919 in Jamestown, a son of the late Simon and Engeborg Edborg Carlson. He attended Jamestown schools and later graduated from the Vehicle Maintenance School at Fort Benning, GA. In early years, he was employed at Monitor Furniture Co. and later with the Postal Telegraph and Cable Co. as a messenger. In 1939, along with his brothers Leonard and Walter, he enlisted in the New York National Guard at the local armory Co. E. 174th Infantry Regiment, 44th Division. The division was deployed for one year after training at Ft. Dix, NJ. During WWII, Wally was wounded in action in Holland on Dec. 27, 1944. He was hospitalized in England and then in the U.S. Due to his combat wounds he was limited physically. He was discharged January 12, 1946 as a Staff Sergeant and received the following medals: Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Good Conduct, American Defense Service, American Campaign, European African Middle Eastern Campaign with three bronze stars, WWII Victory, Combat Infantryman Badge and Honorable Service Lapel Button. When he was physically able, Wally enjoyed target shooting and was a member of the Falconer Rod and Gun Club. He also enjoyed riding his bicycle, playing miniature golf with his nieces and nephews and watching baseball on TV. He attended the New Creation Assembly of God, formerly the Calvary Assembly of God, where he had been a member for 60 years. Surviving are two sisters, Dorothy Miller of Apple Valley, MN and Joanne Bullock of Jamestown; a brother, Leonard Carlson of Kennedy; and ten nieces and three nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Jeannine Lundsten and a brother, Lt. Walter C. Carlson who was killed in action October 7, 1943 at the invasion of Salerno, Italy during WWII. The funeral will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. William Blair, pastor of New Creation Assembly of God, will officiate. Burial will be in Soldier's Circle of Lake View Cemetery. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home.
