Norm, Sue, Noel and I go way back to the days of his internship at Zion Lutheran in Williamsport, MD. We developed an instant friendship and the four of us spent so many wonderful times together. Norm and Sue became instant family members. We celebrated birthdays and holidays together and enjoyed camping, eating pizza and just "hung out" together. Although miles and time established a distance between us, they will always be our drarest friends. God bless both of you. Rest in peace, Norm...we love you.

Dear Sue....I just heard of Norm's sudden passing, and I am just so stunned! God Bless you sweetheart. My loving thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. I lost Fred on December 18th after about 4 weeks of in and out of the hospital. It was just terrible, but I simply can't imagine the suddeness of this. I can only assure you that you will miss you wonderful and talented man, but your faith and his will be your anchor. I'll forever remember the fun times at our house for a 'garage' or backyard bar-b-q's when he served at Zion Lutheran in Williamsport, MD during seminary school and after. Take care, and know that my love and best thoughts are with you all. Love Rita Downs, Hagerstown, MD

I just wanted to thank the three of you for sharing Pastor with all of us. He will be missed by the St Mark's family. Even though he didn't know I was becoming a Deacon, I now know that I have someone to take my hand and guide me down the path to the pulpit. I couldn't have a better guide than the one who showed me the Lord, to take me on my journey to serve the Lord. He will always hold a special place in my heart.

Dear Little Nathan,
One day, I hope to meet you and your mom and dad and uncle, but I just have to tell you something right now. Your Grandpa Norm loved you so much. When he spoke of you he just glowed, and love and pride shone out of him like sunbeams.
I remember your Grandma Susan, sent me a picture of you when you were a newborn babe. You were in your Grandpa Norm's arms. I never saw such a tender look on a man's face before or since. It was if he had come into the Gates of Heaven itself. Always know that you brought your grandpa endless joy.
I send my love to you and your Mom Karyn, and Dad Chris, and your Uncle Matt. And kisses and hugs to your wonderful sweet grandma, Susan, my dear, dear friend.
May your Grandpa Norm rest in the peace of his savior and lord.

He was also there for us when my mom passed away in June '06 & my husband, Mike, passed away in Sept '06. He felt bad when he wasn't able to be there for my dad's funeral in Mar '08, because of another commitment but he wrote a letter that was read by the attending pastor. I regret that we weren't able to attend his church service when we visited a few weeks ago. Sue- I was so shocked and saddened to hear about Pastor Norm. You opened your hearts and home to me and made me feel a part of your family, especially in times when I needed it the most (being stranded on the highway in college comes to mind). Your home was such as respite for me in those years, and Norm gave me wonderful counsel and was always interested in what and how I was doing. I will never forget his humor, unique and amazing musicality, and the way he reminded me that I am a precious child of God. He gave me a gift of a cross necklace which I still have from my LCLC days, and I take it out when I am struggling to remind me that Norm saw a uniqueness in me. He left an indelible impression in my heart and I am sure countless others. He pursued a mentorship and friendship with me even when I didn't respond or appreciate it when you were there for me. Thank you and I pray you and your family have peace in these coming days.

Too many great memories to know where to start - how caring Norm was with my mother, all the music, Synod Assembly, Norm's 25th anniversary of ordination, all the music, so many gifts that he brought to shepherding Bethel. What then shall we say in response to this?...Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? ...No... neither death, nor life, neither angels nor demons neither the present nor the future nor any powers...nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. I have wonderful memories of growing up at Bethel Lutheran. Most of which happened through Pastor Norm's leadership and guidance. Sunday school, Confirmation Classes, LCLC, gatherings at the Gauch house, Christmas Caroling, Contemporary Worship Services, the list could go on and on... Most of all I remember the music. When singing Praise Songs with him and my father, the way we would all know with just one look whether to repeat the chorus of a song or end it. Or when we would practice a song again and again - not because we needed to learn it - but because we loved to play and sing together. I loved to sing with Pastor Norm and I loved listening to his sermons. The way he could start with a joke then take just one verse from the lesson and interpret it in a way that made sense in today's world.
My heart goes out to Sue, Chris, Matt, Keryn and Nathan, the Bethel Lutheran Congregation, and all those who miss our great friend. I will continue to keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Peace be with you. ~Alicia
