Obituary of Harold Alvan Johnson
Harold Alvan Johnson, 82, of 14 Dewey Place, died Saturday August 7, 2010, in Heritage Village Rehab and Skilled nursing.
He was born August 28, 1927, in Johnsonburg, PA, a son of Alvan and Elsie Nelson Johnson.
He attended elementary school in Rolfe, PA and graduated from Johnsonburg High School.
From the age of 14 years old he assisted his widowed mother in the management of the family market in Rolfe. Following high school graduation he served in the Pacific Theatre with the 20th Army Air Force ATS Command.
Upon his return to Johnsonburg following military service, he attended and graduated from a meat cutting school in Toledo, OH and then assumed full ownership and management of the family market. While living in Johnsonburg he was a scoutmaster for the local Boy Scout Group and member of the Kiwanis Club and Evangelical Covenant Church, serving as Sunday school superintendant.
Following the sale of the market he was employed by WCA Hospital in Jamestown, initially setting up and developing the Purchasing Department. He belonged to several hospital purchasing groups including a Western New York Chapter of which he was a charter member. He served as Director of Materials Management at WCA until September 30, 1994. He then assumed management of Covenant Manor; he previously served as Chairman of the Board of the downtown facility which was owned and operated by the Covenant Denomination. After almost 13 years at Covenant Manor he retired due to ill health.
His other memberships include First Covenant Church where he served as head usher, deacon and church chairman, Sertoma Club and Jamestown Republican Committee.
Surviving are his wife the former Laura Anderson, whom he married April 12, 1952, three sons Alvan H. Johnson, Paul R. Johnson and Daniel B. Johnson, all of Jamestown; three granddaughters Rachel E. Hicks, Heidi Marie Johnson and Susan Tatiana Johnson; two great grandchildren Madison Claire Hicks and Callie Ada Grace Hicks and two sisters Dorothy McCall of Jamestown and Ethel Lawson of Charlotte, NC.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a sister Mabel Bailey.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in First Covenant Church. Rev. Adam Rohler will officiate.
Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery.
Friends will be received from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday in the Lind Funeral Home.
