Obituary of William M. Moynihan
William M. "Bill" Moynihan, 93, of 683 Baker St. Ext. Jamestown passed away at 8:23 pm Thursday (August 26, 2010) in the Heritage Green Rehab and Skilled Nursing Facility.
A lifelong area resident he was born August 11, 1917 in Jamestown, NY a son of the late William M. and Helen Birmingham Moynihan.
He attended the SS Peter & Paul Parochial School and was a 1936 graduate of Jamestown High School.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving from 1942 to 1945 as a combat engineer during World War II in the Caribbean Theatre of Operations in Trinidad. During his tour of duty he received the Good Conduct Medal, the American Theatre Ribbon and the World War II Victory Ribbon.
Before his retirement in 1983 he was an office manager with Hartley Buick for many years. In earlier years he worked for the former Dibble Pontiac, the former Phillips Motors and several other car agencies in the Jamestown area.
He was a communicant of Holy Apostles Parish at Ss Peter & Paul Catholic Church, a member of the Lakewood Rod & Gun Club, the Lakewood Memorial Post # 1286 American Legion, the YMCA and the Tennis Center. He was an avid handball and tennis player for many years.
He will be remembered as a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather. Bill was affectionately known as "Pop Pop" by his grandchildren whom he loved dearly. He also loved listening to music and had accumulated a huge collection of cd's, tapes and records over the years. His favorite musician was Bing Crosby. He had a great sense of humor and was always ready with a joke or funny story for his many friends. He enjoyed his favorite game of tennis, which he played regularly since he was 12 years of age, winning several city tournaments throughout his life.
Surviving are his wife of 57 years, the former Margaret "Peggy" Gould whom he married June 27, 1953 in Ss Peter & Paul Catholic Church, a daughter Colleen M. Moynihan of Milford, NH, two sons Gary M. (Donna) Moynihan of Lakewood, NY, Stephen P. (Mary) Moynihan of Wexford, PA, six grandchildren Kirby Moynihan, Evan Moynihan, Jenna Moynihan, Meghan Moynihan, Molly Moynihan, Patrick Moynihan.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a brother Robert C. Moynihan who died in 1995.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am Monday in Holy Apostles Parish at Ss Peter & Paul Catholic Church. The Rev. Dennis W. Mende, pastor will be celebrant. Burial will be in the Holy Cross Cemetery.
Friends will be received from 2-5 pm Sunday in the Lind Funeral Home where a Christian Wake Service will be led by Rev. Mende at 1:45 pm Sunday.
