One of my earliest memories of my Uncle Chuck is the gift he brought me from Alaska when I was a little girl. It was a little Eskimo doll all dressed in fur and it had a wooden face. I remember that he was very devoted to his mother, my grandma. When she was in the nursing home, he visited her every single day. I remember the stories he told about why he didn't like to eat chicken (he had a very unappetizing experience with a chicken k-ration while he was in the Army). When he was in the Army, he developed and printed the death photos of Mussolini. One of his greatest joys was flying in the 1941 Aeronca airplane that he and Bud Johnson owned. Chuck loved to hunt and fish and he loved to feed the birds. When he was healthy, he would take his little tractor, and plow the sidewalks for his neighbors on Wilton Ave. After Grandma died, Chuck always remembered us with birthday and Christmas cards. He also keep scrapbooks of all the cards and notes and pictures that his nephews and nieces sent him. One of his favorite desserts was "lemon sponge pie" like grandma used to make. He had a great sense of humor, and was generous with what little he had. I will miss my uncle and will remember him always as a quiet, kind, and gentle man.

"Uncle Chuck" gave me my first fishing pole, which I had for years. He moved to Alaska in the 1950s, I believe, and brought back some great pictures. He was famous [infamous]for his Piper Cub escapades with his good friend Lewis Johnson, and how they managed to survive the crash landings at various points within 100 miles of Jamestown we will never know. All this flying was basically unauthorized and without any knowledge of the FAA, I beleive, and the plane was never registered. Air pirates!!?? And in his later days, when we visited him at the Bonniedale Restaurant - his favorite hang-out - for lunch or dinner, he was always enjoying his "one" medicinal glass of wine, as prescribed by his Doctor. Of course, the "one glass" remained perpetually full...it was, after all, only one glass, Chuck said. Chuck worked in the US Army in Africa and Italy, and told us some hilarious stories about those days. He worked as a photograph technician, and developed pictures for the intelligence part of the Army. He told me once he deveoped the first photos of the Mussolini suicide in Italy. The last time I saw him, Marlene and I stopped by his house and took him shopping for groceries. He did not recognize me, I am sure, but was his usual jovial self. I will remember him fondly...

Chuck Pillsbury was my father's best friend (Lewis H. Johnson). Chuck came to visit us in Soldotna, Alaska, back in the 1950's. My dad built him a room off the back of his carpenter shop. Chuck and my dad were co-owners of a 1941 small airplane and would fly a couple of times a week around Chautauqua county. Ida Pillsbury and my grandmother, Vera Johnson, were next door neighbors and good friends. Chuck was a pleasant person and always willing to help. He was a pall bearer at both of my parents' funerals. I miss him!
