Obituary of Richard G. Johnson
Richard Gilbert Johnson, 79, formerly of 23 West Third St. passed away at 12:00 p.m. Tuesday (October 19, 2010) in the Lutheran Home and Rehabilitation Center.
A lifelong area resident he was born April 18, 1931 in Jamestown, NY a son of the late Henry E. and Hazel Peterson Johnson.
Richard was a 1951 graduate of Jamestown High School and was a member of the Jamestown High School One Hundred Member Club. He also attended Jamestown Community College and Jamestown Business College.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, the U.S. Navy and the Army National Guard. He served with the Company E, 174th Infantry and the Army and Naval Reserves. For many years he was administrator at the U.S. Army Reserve Center in Jamestown.
Before his retirement he was employed at the Post Journal where he was circulation manager during the 1950's.
He had attended the First Lutheran Church where he was baptized, confirmed and married. He was a member of the Ingjald Lodge 65 Independent Order of the Vikings and a former member of the Viking Drum and Bugle Corp. He was a former member of the John W. Tiffany Post 53 Veterans of Foreign Wars, the War Vets Recreation Club, the Lakewood Rod and Gun Club, the Jamestown Elks Lodge 263, the Thule Lodge 127 VASA Order of America and was a former director of the Chautauqua Tier Club Associates.
He will be remembered as a loyal New York Yankee and New York Giant fan. He also loved music and was well known in local jazz circles.
Surviving are a step-son Warren Lundmark of Youngsville, PA, a daughter in law Dawn Lundmark of Jamestown, a brother Robert Johnson of Mission Viejo, CA, three grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins including Elizabeth P. Pierson of Youngsville, PA and Mary Peterson-Lull of Wilson, NY.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his wife the former Dorothy Myers Lundmark Johnson whom he married October 18, 1969 and who died December 9, 1996, and two brothers Clifford Kent who died in 2001 and Rev. Donald Kent who died in 2010.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 26, 2010 in Soldiers Circle of Lake View Cemetery. The Rev. Daniel S. Rumfelt, chaplain of the Lutheran Home and Rehabilitation Center will officiate. Visitation will not be observed.
