I studied with Mr. Johnson from grade school through high school. He loved and was dedicated to the music program, and expected nothing but the best from his students.

I can only aspire, as a teacher myself, to touch as many people's lives in such a positive way as Russell Johnson did. I took a music theory class from Mr. Johnson in 1974-75. I'm quite certain I wasn't the most remarkable student he ever had. I remember Mr. Johnson's patience, good humor, and vast intelligence. I am now a professional musician. I teach Voice at Brooklyn College.
Russell Johnson, along with Donald Bube, Richard Corbin and others, were my mentors growing up in Jamestown. How lucky we all were to be students in the generation when these amazing men taught. It was an era where our teachers were our heroes.
There is no way to calculate what Mr. Johnson gave to his community. Thank you Mr. Johnson for all you taught me.

Dear Johnson Family,
Both my husband and I remember Mr. Johnson. In fact Dave is still taking violin lessons and playing in a community orchestra. We were very lucky to grow up in a community that promoted music and provided us with outstanding teachers and leadership. Dave's parents went on many of Russell's trips and I know enjoyed each of them. We are sorry for your loss. Linda and Dave Rosedahl, Hopkins, MN.

My family and I have very fond memories of Russell and all that he accomplished in Jamestown and at JHS. He positively influenced so many young lives. My Father and Russell worked together for years building the JHS music department and were also very close personal friends. Personally, I was a member of the orchestra for my high school years at JHS. Also, we lived only one street over from Durant Ave. On behalf of Anne, Alexandra, Marty, Peggy, Jim and my parents, I send our condolences to Joann and the rest of the Family.

Dear Johnson family,
I was saddened to learn of Russell's passing. I didn't know him well, having had no relationship with him outside of school. I would see him occasionally, in passing, in one school or another. He always seemed willing to offer a smile and a greeting when meeting, along with a moment or two of conversation. I got to know him best while carpooling one summer for course work at U. of Buffalo. I was always comfortable in his company, and I can say this, I never came across anyone who said that they did not like him.
My deepest condolences to you all.
