Obituary of Joan L. Hall

Joan Hall, a loving wife and mother, 66, of 67 City View Ave. Jamestown, passed away suddenly on Thursday (January 6, 2011) in the Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, OH. A lifelong area resident she was born April 6, 1944 in Jamestown a daughter of the late Edwin and Annie Swanson Erickson. She was a 1962 graduate of Jamestown High School, and subsequently, graduated from Weaver Airline Academy. She began her career as a telephone operator for the former Jamestown Telephone Company, which later became Alltel, Inc., where she worked for 41 years. She was most recently employed part time by the Chautauqua County Mental Health Department for several years. She attended the Bethel Lutheran Church where she was confirmed and married. Joan was a member of the Ingjald Lodge # 65 Independent Order of the Vikings for over 40 years, and volunteered for the Scandinavian Folk Festival. Additionally, Joan supported and volunteered for numerous organizations including the Chautauqua County Meals on Wheels and the Lucy-Desi Museum and Playhouse. She was also very active with the Breast Cancer Survivor's Support Group. Joan had a love for animals and pursued causes, which raised awareness of the overpopulation and cruelty to animals. Joan enjoyed cooking and baking, traits which she learned from her mother who was a personal chef in Hollywood, for Joan Crawford. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family, by whom she will be deeply missed. Surviving are her husband Ray Hall whom she married November 29, 1969, a son Tage (Erica Lawson) Hall, a daughter Tara Hall, two grandsons August "Gus" Viele, Gage Viele, her cousin Karen Johnson, whom she considered a sister, cousin Joy Thompson and her sister in law Lavon (Paul) Landry all of Jamestown. She was preceded in death by her father who died December 28, 1997 and her mother who died February 20, 1999. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 14, 2011, in the Bethel Lutheran Church. The Rev. Adam Miller-Stubbendick, interim pastor of Bethel Lutheran Church will officiate. Friends will be received from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Thursday, January 13th, in the Lind Funeral Home.
