Obituary of James H. Hollern

James H. Hollern, 88, of 124 Aldren Ave., formerly of 215 Hunt Road, died at 4:32 p.m. Friday, January 14, 2011 in WCA Hospital. He was born January 19, 1922 in Meadville, PA, one of nine children of the late Henry B. and Mary A. Rice Hollern. A World War II veteran, he served in the US Navy in the Pacific Theater on the destroyer USS Cony from 1944 to 1946. Jim had been employed as an electrician by the Erie Railroad for 22 years and by the Marlin Rockwell Corp. for 23 years, retiring from MRC-SKF in 1987. He was a member of Holy Apostles Parish, Ss Peter & Paul Church where he served as an usher for many years, and was a RSVP volunteer at WCA Hospital for numerous years as well. Jim was very proud of his family. He enjoyed spending time with them, visiting with friends and working in his yard. Surviving is his wife of 60 years, Elinor Porter Hollern whom he married April 22, 1950 in Meadville, PA; two daughters, Susan E. (Greg) Leif and Ellen H. Bobst, both of Jamestown; two sons, James William (Patricia) Hollern of Charlotte, NC and Timothy J. (Laurie) Hollern of Jamestown; four grandchildren, Adam and Lauren Bobst, both of Indianapolis, IN, Lisa Hollern of Rochester, NY and Jeffrey Hollern of Jamestown; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Ed, Joe, Steve, Dick and John Hollern and three sisters, Margaret Hollern, Martha Wood and Adelaid Bilkey. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Apostles Parish, Ss Peter & Paul Church. Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday in the Lind Funeral Home, where a Christian Wake service will be held at 1:45 p.m. The family suggests memorials be made to Holy Apostles Parish, Ss Peter & Paul Church, 508 Cherry St., Jamestown, NY 14701; or the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children, 1645 W. 8th St., Erie, PA 16505-5097.
