Obituary of Robert R. Melquist
Robert R. Melquist, 89, died Monday, April 4, 2011 at the home of his caregivers, son and daughter-in-law Gary and Kathy Melquist of 1974 Shadyside Road.
Formerly of 2840 Moon Road, Bob was the husband of the late Allene Hoard Melquist whom he married June 29, 1944 and who died March 22, 2008.
He was born May 14, 1921 in Jamestown, one of nine children of the late Fritz and Anna Nelson Melquist, and graduated from Jamestown High School in 1940.
A US Army veteran, he served as a medic in Central Europe during World War II.
In earlier years Bob worked for City View/Tri-Meadows Dairy and the Post Journal. He was then employed by Falconer Metal Specialties and following his retirement, made deliveries for Girton's Flowers for a number of years.
Bob was a member of Fluvanna Community Church where he was active in Senior Adult Fellowship, as well as the Ira Lou Spring Post 149 American Legion.
Surviving are five children: Marcia (Curtis Dooyema) Ogden of Houston, TX, Gary (Kathleen) Melquist with whom he made his home in Lakewood, and Brian (Ardith) Melquist, Dale (Susan) Melquist and Mark (Lisa Dehner) Melquist, all of Jamestown; 15 grandchildren: Deanna (Wade) Kerr of Pearland, TX, Chad (Amber) Ogden of Houston, Kevin (Sara) Melquist and Shannon (Sandy) Volpe of Jamestown, Ryan (Gillian) Melquist of Charlotte, NC, Sean (Sarah) Melquist of Kernersville, NC, Jonathan Melquist of Charlotte, Jennifer (Michael) Carvella of Knoxville, TN, Derek (Lori), Travis (Danielle), Todd (Leslie) and Scott Melquist, all of Jamestown, Adam (Mariah) Melquist of Fayetteville, GA, Tyler (Victoria) Melquist of Pleasant Grove, UT and Joshua Melquist of Jamestown; 23 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Ruth (Ted) Anderson of Jamestown.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by two infant grandchildren, one who died in 1970 and Mitchell Melquist who died in 1978; a great-grandson, Mitchell Carvella who died in 2003; four brothers, Floyd, Milton, Gerald and Glenn Melquist; and three sisters, Mildred Conte, Florence Kling and Dorothy Strong.
The funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday in the Fluvanna Community Church. The Rev. Dayle F. Keefer will officiate. Burial will be in Fluvanna Cemetery.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the Lind Funeral Home.
