Obituary of Christ Constantine
Christ Constantine, 88, of 23 Locust St. Jamestown passed away at 1:35 p.m. Tuesday (April 19, 2011) in W.C.A. Hospital.
A lifelong area resident he was born August 8, 1922 in Jamestown, NY a son of the late Thomas and Chrisula Zdruli Constantine.
He was a 1941 graduate of Jamestown High School and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving from 1942 to 1946 during World War II as a torpedo man 2nd class in the South Pacific.
In earlier years he had owned and operated Constantine Grocery Store at the corner of Chapman and Baker Sts. for 17 years. He had also worked at the former Dahlstrom Manufacturing Company, the Marlin Rockwell Corporation and retired from the former Blackstone Corporation where he worked as the tool room scheduler. During his retirement years he worked as a doorman at the Lakewood Rod & Gun Club for 15 years.
He was a lifelong member of the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church where he served as president of the Fellowship Club. He also served on the Building Fund Committee and the Yassou Festival. He was also a member of the Ira Lou Spring Post # 149 American Legion and a life member of the Lakewood Rod & Gun Club.
For many years he golfed in the Senior League at South Hills Country Club and the Lakewood Rod & Gun Club League at Willow Run Golf Course. He also bowled in the Monday Night Church Bowling League at the former Pine St. and Ten Pin Lanes. He also enjoyed hunting and trout fishing with his family and friends.
He will be remembered as a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather who loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. He also loved being around people and had a sincere concern and cared deeply about how they were doing.
Surviving are his wife the former Athena K. Gjoka whom he married October 7, 1951, two sons Thomas K. (Dawn) Constantine of Jamestown, Mark (Karen) Constantine of Williamsburg, VA, a daughter Christina (Greg) Anderson of Jamestown, two grandsons Jason (Clarissa) Anderson, Timothy Anderson both of Jamestown, a great granddaughter Remy Anderson of Jamestown, two brothers Gust Constantine of Las Vegas, NV, Terry Constantine of Frewsburg, NY and two sisters Loretta (Ted) Searls of Glendora, CA, Virginia Cummings of Jamestown.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers Nicholas and William Constantine and a sister Marie Leake.
The funeral will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church. The Rev. George Zervos, pastor will officiate. Burial will be in the Sunset Hill Cemetery.
Friends will be received from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Friday in the Lind Funeral Home.
