It helped make me who I am today and I am eternally grateful. You will be missed by all who knew you and I look forward to seeing you again in the hereafter.

Wow - a true legend has passed. Even though he wasn't raised in Jamestown, your dad had such an impact on so many in that sleepy little town! Scott's article about him in the PJ was awesome. I am glad you all have such good memories of recent times with him. Hold on to those!

Dutch was my math teacher in high school and also a friend and neighbor. I never liked math and use to ask Dutch, “when will I ever find use algebra?” He would say… someday you will. Several years later after completing the Radiography Program and obtaining a certification in Quality Management, I ran into Dutch and told him…yes…I finally used those skills you taught me. We both laughed.
His wife Chervyl was a very kind and sweet lady as well. I use to babysit for John and Sue when they were small and always enjoyed entertaining them.
My prayers are with you…John, Sue, Kim and Amy. You had great parents who will always be with you in your hearts, your memories and now watching over you from heaven above.
Sincerely,
Judy Slevin

John "Little Dutch" and the entire Leonard family-
Our thoughts and prayers have been with you all since I first heard the news. Geography and time made it difficult to be there with you all today
As you remember, and grieve, and celebrate a great man. The span of years of people whose life he impacted is simply remarkable and a testament to all of us of a life well lived. Recent student and old ones...
Athletes and non-athletes...math lovers and math haters...young and old...he touched them all.
For me the moments I choose to remember are twofold- one time in high school when I came over to
Catlin to meet you for a night with our friends on the town, but you were not there. I sat down and talked with you Dad for an hour or so. We talked high school and sports. It wasn't long before the conversation turned to his beloved Celtics. He pulled a photo album off the shelve and showed me pictures of his trip to see the Celtics play on their home court. His enthusiasm was contagious as he spoke of the experience with such reverence, such respect, it was like a religious experience. Tonight I watched his beloved Celtics dominate the Miami Heat 97-81. Some may say to chalk it up to the parquet floor, or home court advantage, but we all know better. The fact that it came on the very day of his memorial and included a key playing finishing the win with a lot of hustle, diving for the loose ball with the famous Leonard zeal (and with a dislocated elbow) to boot only made it that much more fitting.
The other memory I cherish everyday is when you were there for me John that fateful day back in 1979, when my Dad rounded to 2nd at Jones & Gifford 1 and never came home. You were there for me for hours, days and weeks as I struggled to deal with the loss.
It was not until much later where I saw and learned first hand where that character was developed and bestowed- back on Catlin Avenue.
Peace and God's grace to you all.
"Let us endeavor so to live,
That when we come to die,
Even the undertaker will be sorry.". Mark Twain

My thoughts and prayers go out to your family. I had the pleasure of playing for "Dutch" on the famous CAGEY team. Chili, Ahlstrom, Grissom. Edstrom and Young. With his leadership and basketball knowledge we were able to win the sectionals and beat all of the Erie teams. Dutch was a great story teller with fantastic memory. I saw him last summer when he came by my mother's funeral, He was telling some great stories, many which I didn't even remember. I even think some of them were true. He was the ultimate teacher, whether it was math or hoops. He helped spur my love of basketball and I will always remember him. I hope it is a comfort to you to read all the wonderful rememberances of him. You can tell by all the people "lighting candles" to Dutch that he touched many lifes. God bless.

Just wanted to pass on my condolences on your dad's passing. He was always a treat to run into at the Pub. Plus we go back to when I was in 10th grade and helping run the scoreboard for the basketball games. One of my friends emailed me and reminded me that we used to think "Dutch" was on old guy, but when we were seniors, your dad was 36!!!!!!
There don't seem to be younger folks taking the place of people like your dad.

I am so sorry to hear about your dad. A lot of things have changed on Catlin Ave. over the years, but it was comforting to know that he was still there.
