Obituary of Elsie B. Smith

Elsie B. Smith, 91, formerly of the Dibert Home and South Main St. Ext., passed away at 1:54 p.m. Thursday (August 18, 2011) in the Absolut of Westfield, Westfield, NY. A lifelong area resident, she was born January 10, 1920 in Jamestown, NY a daughter of the late Oscar and Edith Holm Bard. She was a 1938 graduate of Jamestown High School. Before her retirement she and her late husband owned and operated Moore's Seed Store on East Second St. for several years. She had also been employed in the commercial department of the former Jamestown Telephone Company for 11 years. In earlier years she had worked for the former Beshgetoor's Music House and during World War II had worked for the U.S. Air Force. She was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church where she was active in many ladies circles of the church. She was also a member of the Political Study Club, the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and the Diana Lodge of the Independent Order of the Vikings. Surviving are a niece Cheryl Ritch of Fredonia, NY,a great nephew Donald Bard, III of Mich. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband F. Sherwood Smith who died June 1, 1984, two sisters Genevieve Sprague, Evelyn Ritch and a brother Donald O. Bard. The funeral will be held at 4:00 p.m. Sunday in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. John P. Saraka, pastor of the Immanuel Lutheran Church will officiate. Burial will be in the Sunset Hill Cemetery. Friends will be received for one hour prior to the service on Sunday in the funeral home.
