Obituary of James V. Ganurie

James Vincent Ganurie, 96, formerly of Memory Garden and Clearwater, FL passed away at 11:45 p.m. Thursday (August 18, 2011) in the Heritage Park Rehab and Skilled Nursing Facility. A Florida resident until 2001, he was born January 9, 1915 in Jamestown, NY a son of the late Joesph and Phillipa Cordaro Guarnieri. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving during World War II from 1942 - 1945 as a medic with the 3rd Marine Division, Headquarter Co., 21st Marines. He served a second tour of duty in the U.S. Navy from 1951 - 1953 during the Korean War. During his tour of duty he received the Bronze Star Medal for heroism during the battle for Iwa Jima., the Purple Heart and the Presidential Citation for his efforts beyond the call of duty. In earlier years he managed the Lakewood Yacht Club and was also a chef for Moon Brook Country Club and the Corry Country Club. He also owned and operated the Jim Rose Steak House in Corry, PA and the Cassadaga Steak House (White Horse Inn) in Cassadaga, NY for several years. Surviving are his daughter Gloria Ditonto of Baltimore, MD, five grandchildren, James Ditonto, Larry Ditonto both of Jamestown, Nickie Wiles, Noelle Robey both of Baltimore, Laurie Williams of Frewsburg, NY, several great grandchildren, a step son Charles Vishneau of FL, a step daughter Margaret Vishneau of GA, several step grandchildren and step great grandchildren, two sisters Josephine Nicosia of Jamestown, Laura Anderson of Kalamazoo, MI, nieces and nephew Barbara Percy, Patricia Nicosia, Philip Nicosia, Jr., great niece and nephews, LeeAnn Pierce, James Percy, Jesse Percy and also many great great nieces and nephews. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife Rose Trucco Ganurie who died March 20, 1978, his second wife Jennie Vishneau Meyers Ganurie who died January 28, 2001, two sisters Mildred Steppe, Teresa Genco and a granddaughter Cindy Ditonto. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Monday in St. James Catholic Church. The Rev. Darrell Duffy, pastor will be celebrant. Burial will be in the Holy Cross Cemetery. Friends will be received from 6-8 p.m. Sunday in the Lind Funeral Home where a Christian Wake Service will be led at 7:30 p.m. Sunday. Memorials may be made to the St. James Catholic Church, 27 Allen St. Jamestown, NY 14701 or to the Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 11, 219 S. Betty Lane, Clearwater, FL 33756.
