I met Bruce when I was studying with Susan in Florence. What struck me most about Bruce was the way he loved and cherished his family. He only wanted the very best things for them. That generosity of spirit was bestowed on everyone he met. I was so saddened to hear of his passing. It hurts my heart to think about how deeply he will be missed. I will keep you in my thoughts for comfort and strength during this difficult time.

Dear Alta and family,
I am very saddened to learn of your loss with the death of Bruce. I recall that Bruce always had a very special "light" about and within him. He was a kind, considerate, intuitive man, and had a love for all things "great and small." Bruce will always be with you in spirit. My sincere sympathy to all of the Martenson family.

Bruce has and always will have a very special place in my heart. He has taught me so much over the years we spent together about family history, traditions, and values he wished to pass down to his grandson. He accepted and loved me from the first day we were introduced. We laughed, loved and schemed together. No words will ever be able to truly express what he meant to me. He, however, will live on in my life, my husband and my son's lives. We will honor all that he wished us to share and more. Until we meet again. Love you.

I didn't get to know Bruce as a dentist since I live in California. But I knew him as a fellow school mate in the JHS Class of 1948. He was a great ball player and a Great Guy! I'm Happy to know that he had such a wonderful life and family.

Dear Bruce,
You will always be alive in our hearts and in our souls. Thank you for the beautiful memories, thank you for your wit and sense of humor that you transmitted to everyone you came in contact with. You were a leader, and you will always be one. All of the words in the world are not enough to tell you how much you were loved by all of us. I will always remember your words, "life is too short." You taught us that we need to appreciate our loved ones while we can, because time flies by so quickly. Thank you for all of these things, and more. We will miss you so very, very, very much.
Your Angelo

Seeing the photo of Dr. Martenson immediately takes me back. The impact he had on St. Luke's and the entire Jamestown Community as a whole is a true testament to what a remarkable man he is.
The photo so keenly shows the intensity and dedication to whatever he was doing- serving on the vestry, practicing his profession,
playing sports, or just talking to a stranger.
He had a unique gift when he talked with you that made you feel like you had his full undivided attention. For me in my minds eye, it could easily be St. Luke's in the 1970's. In the undercroft. Dad, Dr. Martenson and Father Bill Johnston all holding court, telling stories, greeting family, friends and parishners alike. Oh and laughter, lots and lots of laughter. Made everyone feel at home. That was part of his gift too, Dr. Martenson made all who walked into the doors of St. Luke's, his office, or his home feel welcome, like part of the family. Even after we were gone for over 20 years, Dr. and Mrs. Martenson were always the first to greet us after church. To see how we were doing, to catch up, to remember, and to laugh some more. Speaking of laughter there were many such occassions, including one church outing to see the Buffalo Braves basketball team in Buffalo. The trip had many memorable moments
but suffice it to say that it was Dr. Martenson's quick wit, sense of humor (and oddly enough his medical degree) that got a group of 50 of us out of a little mischief that my Dad had helped orchestrate in the tunnels under the arena.
Always in the right place at the right time, Dr. Martenson was always someone you could count on. To do what needed to be done. As I read the memorial of his life, each word rang so true and I thought "what a remarkable life. He truly is a Renaissance man."
Peace and God's Grace Martensons as you celebrate Bruce's wonderful life, laugh at all the good times that you shared, and pledge to carry on and cherish all of the things that he held most dear, of which you all topped the list.

I was Bruce's neighbor, patient, and friend for many years. We were golfing companions at Moonbrook, and enjoyed various golfing excursions with friends. We played tennis in younger years, and skied together upon retirement....and through it all, he was a joy to be with, and certainly added to my lifes good memories. With a dry sense of Nordic humor, and understated demeanor, he was a true gentleman.
Bruce, may you find contentment and eternal peace...we will miss you!
Alta, and family, Cheryl and I extend our heartfelt sympathy and love.

Bruce was truly a one of a kind. I can honestly say I have never met another man quite like him and I respected and cared about him very much. He was hard working, dedicated and yes funny. From the time I met him, he always welcomed me into his home and made me feel like I was part of the family. We spent countless holidays, vacations and he even taught me how to play his favorite game of golf. Among his many amazing qualities, I will never forget Bruce's great passion. His Passion for life,learning,living, discussing and especially his passion for his family. For his beloved wife, his 3 remarkable children, and his 6 wonderful grandchildren- two of whom are our daughter and son. Olivia and Griffin, I am so happy that you were able to get to know your grandfather and really get to see what a special man he was. I know how much you loved him and know that you will miss him very much. But he will live on in you in so many ways. To Karin and the Martenson family, I'm so very sorry for your loss. I am lucky to have known your father and will never forget all the unforgettable time we spent together. -Eliot

My deepest sympathies to the whole Martenson family. Dr. Martenson was my dentist as a child and we knew the whole family at St. Luke's. After many years away from Jamestown, we became reacquainted over the past couple of years at St. Luke's at the funerals of my brother and father and at the church picnic. I'm glad for these more recent memories. I enjoyed so much talking with him, and the hilarious stories he told.

The memories I have of my grandfather are endless, but I want to emphasize that they are all beautiful. He was part of my life since I was born, that is, 16 years ago. It may seem little but for me it's as if he had been close to me throughout all my life. He held me in his arms when I was little and helpless, he smiled and gave me all the attention a niece could want. He taught me to ride a bike, to swim, to tie my shoes, read the clock and made me discover the beauty of his job. It's fascinating being able to do good for others. And that is why he loved his job so much: he would do anything to help others. The phrase he always used to tell me was: You're special, never forget that. Well, I say that you Grampa are special: one of the most important people in my life. I could continue forever but I'm sure he already knows what I want to say. He has always been there for me and I'm sure he's here with me now. Grandpa, we will meet again one day ... I miss you so much and thanks for all the memories. I love you

My heart goes out to the Martenson family during this sad time.
Bruce was a special man and a special part of my life and for that I am truly blessed. Thank you Bruce, for your love, sense of humor, and always reminding me how great life can be. Thank you for all you shared with me, and taught me over the years and the encouragement you showed me.
I will miss you terribly.
We will meet again and run another race and maybe, just maybe, this time I will let you win!
Alta, Susan, Karin and Greg, please find comfort in these words.
Look for me in Rainbows
Time for me to go now, I won't say goodbye;
Look for me in rainbows, way up in the sky.
In the morning sunrise when all the world is new,
Just look for me and love me, as you know I loved you.
Time for me to leave you, I won't say goodbye;
Look for me in rainbows, high up in the sky.
In the evening sunset, when all the world is through,
Just look for me and love me, and I'll be close to you.
It won't be forever, the day will come, and then
My loving arms will hold you, when we meet again.
Time for us to part now, we won't say goodbye;
Look for me in rainbows, shining in the sky.
Every waking moment,and all your whole life through
Just look for me and love me, as you know I loved you.
Just wish me to be near you,
And I'll be there with you.

I will miss him immensely. We had many laughs at work. I would laugh at his silly jokes that I'd heard for 30 years! I would pick on him about him being a Swede. He'd tell me he felt sorry for me because I have NO Swedish in me. One quote he said often that I'll always carry with me: "the impossible takes a while; miracles a little longer". Sweet memories! Heaven gained a GREAT dentist and I will always be grateful for the years I worked for/with him!
