Obituary of Mary Ann Higgs

Mary Ann Higgs, 81, of 3118 Strunk Road in Jamestown, died peacefully September 9th, 2011 in WCA Hospital surrounded by her loving family. She was born July 15th, 1930 in Jamestown, a daughter of the late Louis and Genevieve Van Dusen Latona. Mary Ann was a 1948 graduate of Falconer High School where she was a National Honor Society student as well as a cheerleader. A lifelong area resident, Mary Ann and her husband, Dick, made their home on the Moon Road for 40 years where she was the proud owner and operator of Mary Ann's Beauty Retreat. In later years, they moved off the hill and settled into their current home on the Strunk Road. She was a most gifted and accomplished artist who spent the last 20 years painting and decorating anything that showed promise. She was especially fond of decorating the hand crafted furniture created by her husband. She was an active member of the Fluvanna Community Church for 60 years, giving her time and talent where ever needed. In recent years, she attended Christ First United Methodist Church in Jamestown. Mary Ann is survived by her husband, Richard L. Higgs with whom she shared a loving marriage that spanned 63 years. She is also survived by two children, a daughter, Terry L. Higgs of Houston, TX and son, Van R. Higgs of Jamestown; three grandchildren, Reese V. Higgs of Jamestown, Leah F. Higgs of Charlotte, NC and Peter V. Higgs of Jamestown; five sisters, Lois Howard of Jamestown, Donna M. Horvath and Barbara M. Samson, both of Mentor, Ohio, Anita P. Zelek of Nashville, TN and Loretta Latona of Parma, Ohio; and a brother, Louis C. Latona of Parma, Ohio. Mary Ann's loving and caring nature has been a legacy of kindness to all who have known her. She carried God in her heart all her life and lived her life accordingly. She spoke her mind and spoke the truth. She knew fear and pain yet stood her ground through faith. She loved and sacrificed for family and friends and will be greatly missed by us all. A memorial service will be held at a later date to be announced by the Lind Funeral Home.
