Obituary of Alda M. Monroe
Alda Edith Monroe, "Mima", 80, of Spring Street, Jamestown, passed away Thursday, September 29, 2011 at WCA Hospital to go home to be with the Lord.
Alda was born on April 5, 1931, in Brookville, P.A., the daughter of the late William and Pearl McCool.
A Jamestown resident most of her life, Alda was a graduate of Jamestown High School in 1949 ("49ers"). Following graduation, she went to work at local five and dime stores, the Jamestown Sun morning newspaper, and then worked for 21 years for the City of Jamestown Clerk's office and Police Department as a metermaid and policewoman. She retired from the City in 1985 to help care for her three grandchildren.
Alda thoroughly enjoyed cooking; baking; playing cribbage with her husband Lowell; playing pinochle with Lowell, her grandson Paul and his wife Holly; going to her and Lowell's camp for cookouts and family gatherings; visiting relatives in Brookville with her daughter Gail; and spending quality time with family and friends, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also thoroughly loved her cat Kiki-two and dog Jackie. She was truly a Saint in the eyes of her family and friends and will sorely be missed by anyone that was lucky enough to have been touched by her gracefulness.
Alda married Lowell Monroe in 1952 and again in 1985, and they enjoyed a beautiful, loving marriage until her passing.
She is survived by her husband, Lowell; son, William of Louisiana; daughter, Gail (Gary) Johnson of Kennedy, NY; her four grandchildren: Jennifer Gens of Mayville, NY; Paul (Holly) Snyder of Westfield, NY; Kristopher (Melissa) Johnson of Norman, OK; Bradon Johnson; and nine great-grandchildren: Novecia and Katianna Utley; Lillian and Charles Snyder; Austin, Hailey and Adam Johnson; and Sadie and Jaydian Johnson.
A memorial service was held on October 3, 2011 at Lind Funeral Home and was officiated by Rev. Donald E. Ray. The service was followed by a burial at Sunset Cemetery.
Memorials may be made out to the Chautauqua County Humane Society.
