How do you capture 93 years of life in just a few words. When I was born Aunt Imie was already 51 years old, the same age I am in her passing. Aunt Imie was a person of love, strength and dedication to duty. Aunt Imie was always there for everyone and would never let you down. Her service in the military and her community was one of honor but most of all compassion. From my earliest years I learned my first bedtime prayer from her. To this day I use those opening words to begin my prayer. As I reflect on her impact on me I try to pick out the perfect story but I find that I struggle to even bring up a single one. The one thing that resinates with me was her limitless character. This was her most most deeming quality. Her bond with each of us is different in many ways but commonly will not break and will never fade. And now in her passing only our memories remain to keep her spirit in our hearts. I leave her with the words she passed on to me some 45 years ago that each of you will recognize but for me they symbolize her in me: Now I lay me down to sleep. I pray the Lord my sole to keep. If I should die before I wake, I pray the Lord my sole to take. Until we meet again.

Mom has always been an inspiration to me in so many ways. I remember once happening on a poem she had written called "Adopted". I read it, not knowing what to expect. It was so sad, telling about someone who was very lonely, and hoped beyond-hope to be adopted into a loving family where she could finally be happy. The despair ultimately turned to joy as the author was revealed to be a puppy, anxiously awaiting her new home. The poem said so much about Mom's empathy and love, I wept at the incredible depth of her wonderful character.
I was amazed to see Misia's Candle describing her Christmas memories at Grandma's house. I had planned to be with Mom this Christmas season. The memories of Christmases at my Grandma and Grandpa's house in Jamestown are still vivid and wonderful.
Mom, I'd like to thank you with the poem I wrote for you about our Christmases together:
Memories of Christmas as a young boy...quiet nighttime walks up Lafayette in the deep snow, diamond-snowflakes glistening in street lights--just for my eyes!--Thank you!--before disappearing into the night.
Puffy vanilla snow-frosting on neighbors' houses forms seamless curves...porches slide gently into bushes and plump, rounded steps; all creation joined together under this thick, soft blanket. The cozy living room at 857, with just-enough room for warm thoughts, and bulbs colored so deeply you are sure you can hear them glow...decorations that soothe my soul; bubbly lights fascinate me and draw me into a tranquil trance. Feeling so "at home", with loved ones to share smiles and hot cocoa...Mommy, living the spirit of Christmas: joyously giving of herself to see others smile.
Christmases in Germany opened my mind to the global family of all humankind; O'Tannenbaum and Stille Nacht took me to cathedrals; candles on trees, trips to the Alps, where past yodels echoed in the valleys and made me wonder; centuries-old traditions expanded my home's backyard. Mom, always selfless, gave gifts of the Heart.
Christmas now holds all those wonderful memories, and the promise God intended in the gift of baby Jesus; pure, divine Love thrives, grows with each prayer, each compassionate thought. Beautiful images in my mind's eye take me back, and encourage me forward to God's house. Love is what Christmas is about, freely given with no expectations. Thanks, Mom, for helping show the way.

Mrs Howell, I regret that I never had the privilege to meet you in person but I feel a certain kinship. Your daughter Diana and I work together and she has shared many wonderful stories about you and your family. She is such a wonderful person in so many ways. I thank you for her and give you credit for her character and loyalty. I feel fortunate to have her as a friend. I am looking at your picture and I can see where she gets her looks and her personality! I am sure you are proud of your obituary. You have lived such a full and meaningful life. How satisfying that must be. You have set such an important example for us all. My God bless you and bring comfort to all of your family and friends as they try to accept their earthly loss and transition to a new relationship with you they will come to know.

I will miss you Grandma. I have so many wonderful memories of Christmases at your place in Jamestown, I always wanted to play with the tree and ornaments. You always had the best pets too. So many great times in my life involved you. You were a loving, beautiful and courageous woman and you will be missed by many. I can only hope that someday I can be as strong as you. I know you are with loved ones in Heaven, rest in peace.

Dear Ms. Howell,
I never had the priviledge to personally meet you, but I feel like you are a personal friend. Your daughter, Diana and I have been swapping "Mom"
stories for years. She looks so much like you its unreal !! Your smiles are identical! I have always admired the fact that you graduated from college in 1944, a time when most women did not even attend college. I know that must have been hard. You also served in the Army in WWII the same years my dad served. I know that was a most meaningful experience and I am sure you helped so many of our soldiers, physically and mentally. My Dad still tells war stories and a few of the most traumatic ones are just now surfacing after 64 years. It had taken that long for him to talk about the experiences. I'm sure you have seen and heard it all. Thank you for your dedication to our country and for raising such a wonderful family. Diana is like my sister I never had..She loves you dearly and was talking about missing you way before you were gone.. Look over us
and may you rest in peace.
You will be missed so much :)
