Obituary of B. Rodney Lind
B. Rodney Lind, 84, of 807 West Ave. Apt 5409, Elyria, OH formerly of 133 Ellis Ave. Jamestown, NY passed away at 7:47 a.m. Sunday (November 13, 2011) in his home surrounded by his loving family.
A Elyria resident since 2005 and a Jamestown resident most of his life, he was born June 22, 1927 in Ilion, NY a son of the late Bernhard F. and Dorothy Willets Lind.
He was a 1945 graduate of Jamestown High School and a graduate of the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science.
Rod was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving during World War II from July 16, 1945 to July 23, 1946. He served as a Yeoman Third E.H. Class on the transport ship USS Hermitage. His tour of duty took him to France, Japan, Saypan, Panama, Pearl Harbor and Guam.
Before his retirement on December 31, 1997, he served as President of the family business, The Lind Funeral Home, Inc. where he served the Jamestown community as a funeral director for 47 years. In earlier years he was a Fuller Brush Representative covering the north side of Jamestown for seven years.
He was a member of the Elyria Ohio First Baptist Church and while living in Jamestown was a very active member of the Zion Covenant Church for over 40 years. He was also a soloist in several church vocal groups most of his life.
He served for many years on the Board of Directors for the former Jamestown Savings and Loan Corporation and was a member of the Mt. Moriah Lodge # 145 Free and Accepted Masons, the Lakewood Memorial Post # 1286 American Legion, the Chautauqua County Funeral Directors Association, the New York State Funeral Directors Association and the National Funeral Directors Association.
Rod will be remembered as a very unselfish person always giving of himself in many ways. He was often a silent benefactor, providing needs without recognition. His charitable heart left an impact on his family and on his community. Those who knew Rod personally remember his heartfelt greetings, his warm hugs, and his frequent reminders of his love.
Surviving are his loving wife of 63 years, the former Joyce E. Andersen whom he married August 22, 1948 in the First Baptist Church of Jamestown, two daughters Bonnie S. (Daniel) Drake of Jamestown, NY, Mellanie A. (Michael) Kearney of Elyria, OH, two sons Terry R. (Darlene) Lind of Harrisonburg, VA, Kevin E. (Wendy) Lind of Steamboat Springs, CO, nine grandchildren Benjamin (Karen) Drake, Julie (Chris) Morano both of Jamestown, NY, Joshua (Claire) Parschauer of San Francisco, CA, Kara Parschauer of Elyria, OH, Nathan Lind of Pasadena, CA, Seth (Theresa) Lind, Rachel Lind both of Harrisonburg, VA, Noah Lind of Steamboat Springs, CO, Matthew Kearney of Elyria, OH, nine great grandchildren Morgan, Marley and Trey Drake, Teanna, Cyrus and Jaymin Morano, Eva, Alexa and Lucie Lind, two brothers Robert C. (Virginia) Lind of Jamestown, NY, Herbert W. "Skip" (Louanne) Lind of Chautauqua, NY, two sisters Andrea M. Hyde of Hudson, OH, Carol A. Kindberg of Jamestown, NY.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a son Tracy B. Lind who died October 14, 2006, a sister Ruth E. Donelson who died May 23, 2003 and a great grandson Trey Benjamin Drake who died May 5, 2002.
The funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday in Zion Covenant Church. The Rev. Rick Miller, pastor of Zion Convenant, Rev. Greg Fondell, pastor of Bethel Covenant Church, Ellsworth, WI and Rev. Beth McKee, chaplain of the Wesleyan Senior Living Community, Elyria, OH will officiate. Burial will be in the Lake View Cemetery.
Friends will be received from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Thursday in the Lind Funeral Home where a Masonic Lodge Funeral Service will be conducted at 6:45 p.m. Thursday.
