Tara, Tage and Erica, You have all been in my thoughts and prayer always but especially in this last year. I know it has been a very difficult year for you and all of those close to you. I loved your Mom and Dad very much and we spent many good times together. I hated being so far away but the times we spent together will always be precious memories to me. I love you all

To the Hall family,
It was so sad to read the news about Ray's passing. It was quite a shock. He was a real champion of the underdog. On chance when I would catch his radio show, I always found his radio persona, his commentary, whether political or civic to be enlightening. It was always fun to listen to Ray interview a person that I happened to know. He will be missed.
God be with you all during this difficult time.

To the Ray Hall Family;
I knew Ray mainly from his radio show, had met him in
person, and must say what a
tremendous asset he was to the local democratic community. No one stood up for the underdog like Ray Hall. We have missed his radio vocals for some time and now we will have no one to speak up for us even in writing. He was one of a kind and the entire community is at a great loss. Our best wishes to your family, he can never be replaced. Rest in peace Ray and give the greedy ones in heaven a run for their money.

I was woken to the news of Rays death and was taken back by it all. My heart was saddend by the news and my thoughts of how terrible it is for all who new Ray. But most of all his family. It is hard loosing loved ones but loosing mom and dad in less then a year part know words can come close to trying to overcome that. Ray and Joan will be forever missed but never forgotten they will forever have a place in my heart two wonderful people you just dont find to many like them. Ray no longer has to live with a broken heart he is now with the love of his life rejoicing in heaven. Hope that will help to bring some joy to such a overwhelming 2011 knowing that he did not want to leave his loved ones behind but just could not heal his broken heart his heart is no longer broken and he is were he longed to be in heaven. MUCH LOVE TO THE FAMILY

Society often measures the value of a person's life by the public contributions he or she makes, and to a degree the depth and breadth of those contributions. For sure, Ray contributed to the public good in many diverse ways in both ideas and actions. But, from my limited perspective as a neighbor and friend, I believe Ray had the greatest impact in his devotion to the basics of what makes us human - relationships. As so many have said, Ray respected people even if he strongly opposed their politics. In all my talks with Ray, I could tell that his message had the same simple, direct theme - promoting the public good. His interaction with me and other neighbors always revealed his inner gentleness and kindness. Ultimately, his love of family was clear even when viewed from a distance. To me it is the family relationship where Ray made his greatest contribution, those things done out of sight to the rest of us, and it is there where the greatest loss lies. To Tage, Tara and all the family, I offer my deep sympathy.

I'm going to treasure one of my last memories of our good neighbor, Ray. He & Joan had just had their pretty new garden & yard finished with a beautiful white picket fence. Ray was sitting with his beloved dog, Meadow. I walked up to the fence to compliment him on the yard and he introduced me to his pet. Then he pointed out a statue of St. Francis that he said he felt "blessed" to have found & purchased. He said we should feel free to just come & sit in his garden anytime. He seemed like such a kind -hearted, gentle soul who wanted to share his blessings with everyone. I like picturing him & Joan in the garden of paradise now. Our sympathies to Tage, Tara & families, who took such good care of Ray. God Bless, Linda Demler

My deepest sympathy.
I knew Ray since 1970 when I came home for good and was introduced by my mother. She and my dad were very fond of Ray and he of them which was a comfort to me when they died.
As a person professionally involved in local history I am concerned that special attention be given to preserving the record of the most colorful life in Chautauqua County in the late 20th century. Without first hand accounts and good records, no one in later ages will believe one man could pack so much life in a life. Circus hand, boxer, Air Force veteran, Senate or Congressional aid, farmer, race horse owner, telephone lineman, union president, political operative, legislature clerk, legislature candidate, retail merchant, auctioneer, cattle buyer, substitute preacher, substitute song leader, investment advisor, minor think tank organizer, tax preparer, radio talk show host and announcer, and author. And all with little formal education. He thought of starting a newspaper. He thought of buying out the local radio stations, and I must not know the half of it.
I’m also concerned that his book about “Bucky” Phillips and his other book, whatever that may be, not get lost in the shuffle somehow. I’m sure they would be unique contributions to the record of our time.

Words won't seem to mean much at this time. They will go in. They will go out. Emotions will be everywhere and anywhere. In time, all will fall into place and memories of a kind, caring and loving soul will replace the hurt that is deep within today. Thoughts and prayers to all family and friends. May God Bless.

Tage,
I am deeply sad for the loss of your father. I knew how much he meant to you and your sister Tara. He was a champion of the people and it is no coincidence that you both went into the teaching field. Thank you for all the care you gave him especially since the loss of your Mom. He had a rich life and he is smiling down upon everyone from above as he proudly brags about his wonderful family.
God bless,

Being a former reporter I had the opportunity to cover stories both about and with Ray. In particular I remember a meeting of the Jamestown School Board. The meeting was held in the auditorium at one of the schools. Following the formal meeting we had both gone up on stage to interview one of the board members. At the end of the interview we were both descending the steps to the main floor. Ray said to me, "Young man, (I'm only 6 months younger) my vision is not very good. Would you help me down the steps?" I did the best I could, never telling him I was scheduled for cataract surgery the following day

Don't know where to start...there is so much to say, yet no words. Ray was one of the most interesting men I have ever met. The dedication that Tage showed to his dad speaks volumes about what great parents he had. I enjoyed my days spent with Ray, just talking...talking about EVERYTHING. I was proud to call him my friend and so happy to call him family after our "kids" married. He will be missed but never forgotten. Many people will hear his distictive voice for a long time, in memories of his radio show, political talks, and just friendly chats. I smile on the inside, knowing Joanie gets Ray for Christmas, as I cry on the outside, for his family that will miss him like crazy. Love ya Guys.

Some of my earliest memories are of our family friend Ray Hall. When I was a child I tried to make sense of his being from Cherokee County, and having horses and a westernware store. I finally announced that Ray must be half Cowboy and half Indian.
Jamestown has lost a great personality.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Hall family. Ray was the most outspoken person other than me, that I can think of. I had the pleasure of being on the Hall Closet show several times during the big smoke ban days. He was very helpful in helping with the political side of the smoke ban and he never let me give up on fighting for what I thought was good for my business. He will always be remembered in my heart...
