Obituary of Ada P. Ramsey

Ada P. Ramsey, 79, of 111 Elizabeth St. Lakewood, passed away peacefully Sunday February 12, 2012 in her home surrounded by her family. She was born November 5, 1932 in Greene, NY the daughter of the late Albert and Alice Mandigo Ramsey. Ada retired in 1987 from the Gowanda Psychiatric Center after a 35 year career in the mental health field. Following retirement, she was appointed as a member of the Gowanda Psychiatric Center's Board of Visitors, which is a 7 member board, appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the NYS Senate. She initiated the first family support group at GPC, started a work for pay program, and provided a monthly support meeting in the community for family care providers. She was also a member of the Lakewood United Methodist Church; Martz Observatory; Jamestown Audubon Society; the Business and Professional Women's Organization of Falconer; a member of the board of the League of Women Voters of Jamestown; American Legion Auxiliary of Randolph; the Buffalo Psychiatric Center's Retirees Club; and the families as partners support groups of Jamestown. Additionally, Ada was a licensed NYS Cosmetologist and NYS licensed Emergency Medical Technician. Her hobbies include, writing fiction and poetry, oil painting, arts and crafts, gardening, camping, and traveling. Surviving are her partner, Angela Smith; a niece, Belle McMahon; and three nephews, Robert Smith, Edward Ramsey, and Rick Ramsey. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday February 16, 2012 in the Lakewood United Methodist Church. The Rev. Violet A. Davidson, pastor, will officiate. The family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Thursday in the church. Memorials may be made to the Lakewood United Methodist Church, 164 Shadyside Ave. Lakewood, NY 14750; or the Chautauqua County Humane Society, 2825 Strunk Road, Jamestown, NY 14701; or to a charity of choice.
