Obituary of Sylvia M. Jones
Sylvia M. Jones, of Dewittville, died February 11th in Raleigh, North Carolina following a short illness. She was born November 26th, 1933 in Senora, Virginia. Sylvia was the daughter of G. Lee and Gladys Dodson Moore, who adopted her after the death of her mother in 1934. She was raised in Richmond Virginia, graduating from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1952, and then attended Madison College (now James Madison University), New Mexico A&M and SUNY Fredonia. Sylvia married Ralph C. Jones of Jamestown, New York in 1954. They lived for a short time in Las Cruces, New Mexico before returning to Chautauqua County in 1957 where they built their home near Dewittville, New York.
Sylvia worked for BOCES from 1973 until her retirement from the T.E.A.M. program in 2000. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Jamestown. She was a former Girl Scout Leader and member of the Board of the Chautauqua Area Girl Scout Council. She was also a former member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and Remocwens Club in Jamestown.
Sylvia is survived by her three daughters, Sue (Aengus Lawlor) Jones of Philadelphia, Fran Jones of Raleigh, North Carolina, and LeAnn (Michael) Childs of Dewittville, New York; and one son, John Jones of Philadelphia. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Nate Childs, Adie Childs and Victor Jones-Valverde; her sister, Martha Moore (Ralph) Wilson of Richmond, Virginia; and her brother Gene (Janice) Walker of Lancaster, Virginia.
She is predeceased by her husband, Ralph C. Jones, her parents, G. Lee Moore and Gladys Moore, her mother Blanche Dodson Walker and her father, Carlton Walker, and also by her brothers Adrian Walker and Francis Walker. Her brother Gene Walker died February 12, 2012.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Lind Funeral Home. Rev. Michael Childs will officiate.
Friends will be received from 6-8 p.m. Friday and for one hour prior to the service Saturday in the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Girl Scout's Camp Timbercrest, Roger Tory Peterson Institute or the Dewittville Volunteer Fire Department.
