Obituary of Claude A. Nelson
Claude A. "Sarge" Nelson, 82, of 4009 Dutch Hollow Road, died Wednesday April 4, 2012, in Absolut at Westfield.
He was born May 14, 1929, in Farmington Township, PA, a son of the late Harry and Mable Stanton Nelson.
He was a 1947 graduate of Lander High School.
He was a 24 year veteran of the US Air Force, retiring in 1971 as a Master Sergeant after having been stationed in Germany, Alaska, Montana, Vietnam, Norway and Washington State. Following his military career he was employed for 20 years by Maple Grove Central School System, retiring in 1991 as head custodian.
He was a life member of Robert W. Illig Chapter 47 Disabled American Veterans, Johns W. Tiffany Post 53 VFW, Thomas G. Stone Post 1996 AMVETS and Samuel Derby Post 556 American Legion, Frewsburg. From 1999-2000 he served as State Commander of Disabled American Veterans.
Surviving are a sister Dora Anderson of Deland, FL; several nieces and nephews including Carol Nelson of Frewsburg and a brother-in-law Richard Swanson of Jamestown.
He was preceded in death by his wife the former Betty Winton, who died February 6, 2010 and four brothers Harold, Virgil, Alfred and John Nelson.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in the Lind Funeral Home. Rev. Dayle F. Keefer will officiate.
Burial will be in Fluvanna Cemetery.
Friends will be received for one hour prior to the service Monday in the funeral home.
