I first met Jerry at craft shows that our wives were a part of and more recently while learning to play pickleball.
He was a very outgoing and friendly person.

Years ago my fathers friend and hunting partner Jimmy introduced me to Barb and Jerry when we moved to Maine. Having his friendly positive advise and his family's support back then meant a lot to me and my family. I recall the pig roasts, pool parties and helping around their place. One trip to see a Buffalo Bill's game in David's van sticks out. It was so cold our beers froze if you put them down and there was almost no heat in the van for the long trip back to Maine. We had a blast and I will never forget it. Barb, Ed and Lisa I feel for your loss , with deepest sympathy

Dear Mattison Family,
We met Jerry while being introduced to the game of pickleball at the Maine Memorial School. He was always willing to help anyone learn the game and encouraged them that their game would improve.
He was a very mild mannered man, and alot of fun.
Our deepest sympathy to all of you at this time.

I was very sad to read about Jerry's passing. My condolences to the family.
Jerry and I go back a long way. We were classmates at RIT. We played basketball and volleyball on the same teams and always came out winners. Jerry and I both ended up at IBM in Endicott and again were on the same basketball team and again were winners.

Farewell Jerry,
So very special, strong and warm and are the wonderful memories your family and friends have of you. Treasured memories of you are alive in our minds and hearts and especially in the hearts of your wonderful wife, Barbara, and the rest of the Mattison clan.
You have been a husband who adored Barbara who became your perfect soul mate. You taught your children and all the people with whom you worked and played with to reach for the moon and the stars as you always did in everything you undertook -- and you found your lucky star when you married Barbara.
You and Barbara have always been there for your family and friends in so many special ways.
You followed the shining examples your parents set for you.
You left all of us precious legacies and and solid examples of what a husband, father, and grandfather, great-grandfather and friend should be.
Jerry, you lived a large life because you what you accomplished and what you stood for.
You had class, poise, confidence, intelligence, and an exceptional and a wonderful sense of humor. Your quotes and quips brightened many a day. I don’t recall a time spent with you that you did not come up with a word or phrase that inspired smiles all around. You also had a way of focusing on people with total attention and interest in who they were and what they were saying as though each of them was the most important person in the world.
You were a living lesson to us on how to do things right, and above all, how to be your own person.
No one we have known had a better sense of honesty, commitment and integrity than you demonstrated all your life. And few could claim having that dry, Jerry Mattison wit. And, few could match that fierce Mattison determination when you decided something had to be done. You proved that for the hundredth time when you made the commitment to promote pickle ball in Chautauqua County.
You gave your all to your family, but, at the same time, you gave your all to the different roles you assumed and tasks you undertook.
It is no exaggeration to say that you touched the lives of the people you met in so many positive and meaningful ways.
You were a magnificent husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. You truly graced our lives.
Someone wrote a beautiful thought on the death of Robert Kennedy that expresses my feeling about you:
"And when he shall die, take him and cut him out in little stars
and he will make the face of heaven so fine that all the world will be in love with night and pay no worship of the garish sun."
Now, Jerry, you have left for greener pastures; a spiritual place where you will inspire, cajole and rattle the cages of the angels and the family and friends who have passed on before.
And, you, with your warm, heartfelt, wonderful and so special Mattison wit will make those angels smile and laugh with your dry and wry witticisms and stories, as you did to and for your family and the rest of us here on earth.
“Farewell noble knight – we shall miss you,
life will not be the same without you,
You treated me and everyone with great respect.
You were a man of principle,
You were a man of god,
Farewell gentle knight –
Until we meet again.
Your friend,
Joe
P.S. We feel a thousand times richer because you crossed the paths of our lives, but, God knows, we shall miss you. As the Poet Wordsworth wrote after the death of his six year old son:
You are now like the wind; we cannot see you….but we will always feel you.

About a year ago I met Jerry at the Lakewood Y. He was patiently making his way around the courts helping all of the newcomers learn the game of pickleball. He had such a positive attitude and love for the game. He planted a "cucumber" seed in Lakewood that is evergrowing. Sorry for the loss of a very nice man.
