Dear Elinor Hare,
There is a quote by Erma Bombeck that depicts your splendid life’s journey:
“When I stand before God at the end of my life,
I would hope that I would not have a single bit
of talent left and could say: I used everything
you gave me lord. I used everything you gave me!”
Elinor, you literally used everything the Lord gave you, and I think a whole lot more. You were a champion for all of us, but especially for incarcerated women who had no one to speak for and stand up for them; no one to fight to improve their miserable conditions. These women, your loved ones and any one else who knew you feel a thousand times richer for having had you in their lives. I know I do.
You had an overwhelming zest for life and unmatched energy for living.
You were a powerful example of the right way to approach life: above all, how to be your own person and how to be courageous through trying times.
You gladdened our lives.
Your friend,
Joe Gerace, Sr.

My memories go way back to when I was a teen and Elinor and Rosie were friends with my youth leader - part of the singing group she was in. I remember a backyard pool party and have pics! Her faith was evident then and it is a real blessing to know how she allowed God to use her in so many different ways! My prayers and thoughts are with the family in your grief! May God wrap His ever loving, everlasting, peaceful arms around you all as you celebrate her life and now her living with her Lord and Saviour!

Many years ago, our families were " back door neighbors"-- I'm hoping you'll remember the Bloods. Your Mom did my hair when I was a teen-- she was such a nice lady! She and Rosie were such wonderful women --I remember being impressed at a young age with their sense of " goodness". I never knew your Mom as a pastor, but I'll bet she was terrific! May you all be comforted by sweet memories! Paula

I first met Pastor Elinor at the Western New York Conference (before it merged). I believe it was back in the late 1990's when she went to the podium and told part of her life story. The part about becoming a pastor on Riker's Island and how hard it was being a woman pastor back when she started Riker's Island ministry because there weren't too many women pastors back then.
She was an amazing woman with whom I had the pleasure of starting to get to know her more personally by the ministry we formed together about 1 1/2 years ago. I'm just so thrilled to have been able to answer God's call and am thankful for her willingness to help me start it.
She was a wonderful, loving, caring person who always had time to listen to your problems inspice of her own illness.

Colleen and all,
You may not even remember me, since my last memories of you were when we were teens at Camp Findley. I was dimly aware of your mother then, but came to know her far better when I was serving United Methodist Churches in Western New York. We often talked at the occasional church gatherings we would attend because of our ministries, and more recently at the old Erie EUB reunions at Camp Findley. I am sorry to learn of her passing. I was aware of her illness, but since my retirement to Columbus four years ago heard only occasional word on her. I knew her as a devoted and caring servant of Christ, a faithful friend to Rosie, whom I probably knew even better.
No one can know how deeply you grieve, although my wife's passing in March has given me a real feeling of grief which goes all beyond I had shared with hundreds of church friends through the years.
I would not wish you to be spared your grief, but rather than he would wrap all of you in his love so that every pain of sorrow may grow into a deeper love for each other.
God hold you gently and firmly.
Ernest Tracy

I will remember times spent with Elinor at Kidder Memorial, then EUB church in the sixties as she led the youth group and helped with confirmation class. I later saw her at Camp Findley and her visit to Wellsville, NY to talk to Wellsville First UM Church about her advocate work at Riker's Island and then in Lakewood when I visited briefly with her and Rosie Lesher. Well done thou good and faithful servant. Barbara Stormer

To Elinor's Family. . .what an inspiration your mom was to so many people. Our lives crossed over so many different paths, from her ministry, to friendships, to learning she went to school with my mother, to Vern fixing her garage door! Elinor's face always showed the heart of God, she would reach her hand out to all, never a discriminating word or action, and loved to spread the word of the Lord--a true calling from God. We so admired all the work she accomplished with women's ministry, we made it a point to go where she was speaking. She will remain in our hearts forever, her life giving us all encouragement and hope. God is rejoicing and heaven is welcoming an angel today! May God wrap His loving arms of comfort and strength around all of you. Peace be with you.
