Obituary of Roy L. Steen

Roy L. Steen, 83, formerly of Garfield Road, died at 8:35 a.m. Wednesday (August 1, 2012) in Tanglewood Manor. He was born June 16, 1929 in Minot, North Dakota, the son of the late Clarence and Pansy Hackett Steen. Roy grew up on a farm in North Dakota. He was a US Army Veteran, serving during the Korean era as a Corporal with the 11th Transportation Battalion stationed out of Fort Eustis, VA. Following his military service, while living in Washington D.C., he met Mabel Munson. They were married December 12, 1953 and celebrated over 55 years of marriage before her death on April 29, 2009. Prior to retirement in 1992, Roy worked at Jamestown Metal Corp. Earlier he worked at AVM and Art Metal Corp. and was a member of the International Association of Machinists union. He enjoyed gardening, and had grown just about everything under the sun, word find puzzles, photography, and travel. Roy was a master builder and craftsman, building his own house along with many other projects. He was very proud that he obtained his GED. Surviving are five children, Debrah A. (Daniel) Fischer of Oakfield, NY; David R. (Margaret) Steen of Brockport, NY; Brenda L. (Merri) Steen of Conneautville, PA; Caroline M. Steen and Bryan L. Steen, both of Jamestown; six grandchildren, Susan (Brian) Samuelson of Owego, NY; Karen Hall of Oakfield, NY; Tanasee (John) Conner of Hamlin, NY; Matthew Steen of Niagara Falls, NY; Andrew and Aaron Steen both of Jamestown; six great grandchildren; three sisters, Betty Payne of FL; Pearl (Don) Bloms of WY; Carol (Doyle) Anderson of AZ; a brother, Claire (Eudene) Steen of ND; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Besides his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Viola Steen and a brother, Melvin Steen. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. Timothy Phelps, Hospice Chaplain, and the Rev. Daniel Rumfelt, Lutheran Home Chaplain, will officiate. A burial service will follow in Bemus Point Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday and for one hour prior to the service Saturday in the funeral home.
