Obituary of Sylvia D. Johnson

Sylvia D. Johnson, 94, of 76 Pearl Ave. Jamestown, NY passed away at 11:20 p.m. Thursday (September 13, 2012) in the Heritage Park Rehab and Skilled Nursing Facility. A lifelong area resident she was born August 23, 1918 in Jamestown, NY a daughter of the late Elmer S. and Dorothy M. Hedlund Johnson. Before her retirement years, she was co-owner, with her late husband, of the former Johnson Florist, Inc., a family business that was started in the early 1900's. She was a long time member of the Hillcrest Baptist Church where she sang in the church choir when it was located on Chandler St. She was also active in the Hillcrest Ladies Aid Society, Homebuilders Group and really enjoyed "The Club Girls", her special friends from Hillcrest that met for over 50 years. In recent years she was a member of the Busti Church of God. Surviving are a son Barton R. (Phyllis) Johnson of Frostproof, FL, a daughter Joy S. (Don) Smith of Jamestown, with whom she made her home, four grandchildren Barton R. (Susan) Johnson, II of Orlando, FL, Steven J. (Karen) Johnson, Kimberly J. (Leon, Jr.) Reed, Rev. Scott R. (Danica) Smith all of Jamestown, nine great grandchildren Gregory, Collin, Heather, and Holly Johnson, Tyler, Coby, Hailey and Ashlyn Smith and Leon Reed, III, a brother Fenton (Doris) Johnson of Largo, FL, and his sister in law Betty Johnson of Jamestown. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Russell C.C. Johnson whom she married March 5, 1937 and who died July 1, 1981 and two brothers Barton H. Johnson, Everett Johnson. The funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. Roy E. Ferguson, pastor of the Busti Church of God will officiate. Burial will be in the Lake View Cemetery. Friends will be received from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home.
