Obituary of Marilyn F. Lannan

Born February 14, 1924 in Humberstone, Ontario, Canada. Passed away peacefully in Jamestown, New York on October 6, 2012 at 88 years of age. Predeceased by parents, Frances (Dinty) Moore and Madeline Moore (nee, Neff), and former husband, Michael John Lannan. Survived by brother John Moore, of Niagara Falls, Ontario; sister Kathleen Brodhurst, of Port Colborne, Ontario; daughters Lesleylinda Lannan, of Buffalo, NY, Laurie (Brad) Vorp, of Ashville, NY, and Lynn (Robert) Chambers, of Brewster, MA; as well as grandchildren Benjamin and Emma Fabian, and Katherine and Madeline Chambers. In 1942, Marilyn deferred her plans to attend nursing school following graduation from Port Colborne High School to join the war effort by working for Fleet Aircraft in Fort Erie, Ontario, where she served as an inspector of planes deployed by the Royal Canadian Air Force. When the war ended, Marilyn studied at St. Michael's Hospital School of Nursing in Toronto, Ontario, where she earned her Professional Registered Nurse diploma in 1948. Throughout her nursing career, which lasted until her retirement from Lockport Memorial Hospital at the age of 72, she wore a starched nursing cap and white stockings and uniform every day. Marilyn respected the dignity of her patients while ministering personal and attentive nursing care in a changing healthcare environment. Marilyn's other "cap" was that of homemaker. She moved her household and family numerous times as her husband's career with Robin Hood Flour/International Multifoods took them to Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan; Minneapolis, MN; Montreal, Quebec; Kansas City, MO; Fort Erie, Ontario; and Lockport, NY, where she made her home from 1966 until 2010. The daughter of an Olympic hockey silver medalist, Marilyn was a sports enthusiast, especially fond of the Buffalo Sabres and Toronto Maple Leaf and Blue Jays teams. Called Mimi by her grandchildren, who thought she could do anything, she was a talented baker, seamstress, milliner, knitter, furniture refinisher, upholsterer, and household handyperson. Marilyn was proud of "her girls" and their families, who are certain she's now putting things in order in heaven. Interment will be at a private service in Morgan's Point Cemetery, Wainfleet, Ontario. Friends are invited to share remembrances with the family on Saturday, October 27, 2012 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at The Shamus Restaurant, 98 West Avenue, Lockport, NY.
