Your comment is aitaiwng moderation. November 13, 2010 at 11:22 pmI was 15 and my name was still Ethan Hurwitz. I was a nice, good Bar Mitzvah boy from Roslyn and Eppy loved me so much that he made a deal with me that I could come in the back door to any show I wanted, and for free, if I promised not to drink under age (age was 18 then)… I kept the promise (when inside the club that is) and I saw some amazing acts, many who became superstars, many who already were superstars (like Billy) and many who were there at MFP on their first “World Tour”, like the Police.By 16 my band from Roslyn High School won the battle of the bands at MFP…We opened that night for David Johansen (Buster Poindexter)… as well as on another night for the new star of Saturday Night Live… Eddie Murphy…By 17 I had a hit record with “FAME” (the original Fame), It sold 3 million copies in the UK, and by 18, my name was Ethan Hurt (legally changed years later by a judge in New York) I was on tour and making records for years in the UK, Germany, Holland, etc, etc. etc… and sold several million records in all.Eppy, My Father’s Place, the scene, the music, was the life education that inspired me to do so many things in the music and film businesses. And although I was never a household name in the USA, because of my experiences in Roslyn and at MFP I made lots of music, friends and money in the industry… I attribute the inspiration of MFP, the musicians and Eppy himself, to being a major influence in the course of my life and career. I am sure anyone would agree, that time, that era, was magic-time!

I still remember the great time we had at "The Grapevine" at Christmas when I was working at Hector's. It is a very sad time when we see our friends fade away. You will be sadly missed. Brenda

My earliest memory of my wonderful uncle was right before I was to start kindergarten....I was sick and couldn't start with the other kids...I was so worried that they would learn to tie their shoes on that first day and I would miss it.....Gene sat with me and taught me how to tie my shoes...I was ready to go! There was never an important event in my life that Dee and Gene were not a part of. No matter where we lived, as we moved from state to state, Dee and Gene were there to visit us. Their presence in my life just got stronger after I married and had my own family. Dee and Gene would share Thanksgiving dinner and Christmas with us year after year. My kids will always treasure the memories .Gene was a gentleman and a scholar. I will always carry him with me in my heart and remember him with a smile. I'm so very proud that I had the privilege of calling him "uncle".....may God bless him richly.

My deepest sympathy to Delores and extended family. I remember Gene way back when he worked at his dad's grocery store on Bowen Street. Who knew I would marry his cousin years later. Days at Grapevine were great memories with Gene and Uncle Einer. May God watch over you.

To Dee and Family, You are in our hearts and prayers. Gene was a very special man, and it meant so much to both of us. He touched many, many lives in such a postive way, he will live in their hearts forever.
"I know for certain that we never lose the people we love, even to death. They continue to participate in every act, thought and decision we make. Their love leaves an indelible imprint in our memories. We find comfort in knowing that our lives have been enriched by having shared their love." Leo Buscaglia
Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. ROMANS 5:1

I worked at the Grapevine about 25 years ago, and I have very fond memories of Gene and "the whole gang." It was a family of people and Gene was the gentleman patriarch. One Christmas he bought my 2-year-old son a giant reindeer. I will never forget that act of kindness. Gene was very special. The world will be a sadder place without him.

Although i have not seen Gene or Delores since my days at JCC (early 70's) i do recall fondly the warmth and congenial spirit which Gene and Delores showed to all of us "Grapeviners" in those days. I pray Eternal Rest be granted to Gene and that Holy Consolation be with Delores and all whose lives where touched by Gene. May he Rest In Peaceful Slumber!

Some of our fondest memories are of Gene and the Grapevine restaurant. I think it was a rite of passage for anyone who graduated from Falconer High School in the day :0).
All of us have great memories of the place and especially the man. Gene was like everyone's favorite Uncle. Always there with a smile and some really great snacks !!
Gentlemen are getting harder to come by these days and we're sure going to miss him. He was a gentleman and just an all around good man. We'll miss you, Gene.
