Obituary of John A. Shanahan
John A. "Jack" Shanahan, 91, of 425 Front Street, died at 3:55 p.m. Tuesday (January 1, 2013) in the Heritage Green Rehab and Skilled Nursing Facility.
He was born May 27, 1921 in Jamestown, the son of John F. and Grace Lundborg Shanahan.
Jack was a 1940 graduate of Jamestown High School and served in the Merchant Marines on the Great Lakes from March 1944 through December 1945. Prior to his retirement, he was a bricklayer and member of the Bricklayers and Allied Craftsman's Local 24 for 66 years. He was a member of Holy Apostles Parish Ss Peter and Paul Catholic Church; Jamestown Moose Lodge; Knights of Columbus; Lakewood Rod and Gun Club; Jamestown Musical Association; Chautauqua Lake Fishing Association and the Herman Kent Post 777 American Legion.
Jack was proud of his Irish heritage and played the fife for many years in the St Patrick's Day and Memorial Day parades. He also enjoyed entertaining friends and family with Irish and patriotic music on the fourth of July.
Surviving are two sons, James W. (Gerry) Shanahan of Kennedy; Daniel A. Shanahan of Jamestown; three grandchildren, Paul A. (Janeane) Shanahan of Celoron; Tracey S. (Josh) Tobias of Brunswick, OH; James R. Shanahan of N. Royalton, OH; a great granddaughter, Gabriella R. Tobias of Brunswick, OH; and two sisters, Margaret "Peggy" (Robert) Shanahan Bloomquist; and Joyce Shanahan Johnson, both of Jamestown.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, June Shanahan Carlson.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday January 5, 2013 in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. Dennis W. Mende, pastor of Holy Apostles Parish will officiate.
Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday January 4th in the funeral home.
