I never met Jack, having spoken to him only once, just before Christmas. It was my pleasure. He must have been a wonderful man. I reached out to Jack, as we are 3rd cousins through the Keeney/Boyle family. My thoughts and prayers to the entire Keeney family.
I would like to leave an Irish Prayer as a small remembrance. I hope this helps ease the pain.
An Irish Funeral Prayer
Death is nothing at all.
It does not count.
I have only slipped away into the next room.
Everything remains as it was.
The old life that we lived so fondly together is untouched, unchanged.
Whatever we were to each other, that we are still.
Call me by the old familiar name.
Speak of me in the easy way which you always used.
Put no sorrow in your tone.
Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes that we enjoyed together.
Play, smile, think of me, pray for me.
Let my name be ever the household word that it always was.
Let it be spoken without effort
Life means all that it ever meant. It is the same as it ever was.
There is unbroken continuity.
Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight?
I am but waiting for you, for an interval, somewhere very near, just around the corner.
All is well. Nothing is hurt; nothing is lost.
One brief moment and all will be as it was before.
How we shall laugh at the trouble of parting, when we meet again.
May God Bless, Jack

I always remember Mr. Keeney as a man of great humor. As a student of Panama Central School I remember having him for a few different gym functions. However; that was many years ago for me. Always had a smile on his face and was always willing to listen to any student if they needed a "PEP" talk. Wonderful teacher, I am sure great friend of the PCS staff and if he reflected that much light in the hallways at Panama Central School I can truely say to his family and friends how deeply sorry I am; and that they may be comforted with a power from above and my He give you peace. He was greatly loved I am sure; and he will be forever missed but never forgotten.

I never saw you coach a football game, nor did I see you work as the Mayor. I just knew you as a Godfather, Uncle, Brother, Husband and Father. I just want to thank you for your Kindness and Love. I hope you find peace knowing your legacy will continue for generations through the love and leadership you gave to your family and many close friends. I will always remember my Uncle Jack for his sense of humor joking with me when I was young and the love he showed to me and my family.
I hope you are enjoying a big bowl of ice cream looking down on us with a smile. We will never forget you and we will all strive to live up to the example you set over your lifetime. RIP Uncle Jack.

A couple things I remember growing up in Panama were, you either baled hay or you played football in the summer and fall or maybe you got to do both. And if you were really lucky maybe you got to have great friendships with incredible teammates and coaches. I was lucky enough to have all of that and more. Coach it is with great sadness that I learn of your passing. I am both honored and humbled that I can say I knew you, much less to say that I had the opportunity to play for you. Your willingness to teach us, to shape us and even sometimes to endure us is unmatched. I am forever grateful to you Coach Keeney! In all our sadness, I choose to celebrate your life and wish the best for all of your of family and friends.

Both of us played football for Mr. Keeney and it was an honor. He was a great coach, a great mentor and a great man who cared about his students and players even after graduation. In 2009, Rick and I were in WCA hospital and when Coach heard that, he came to see us. It meant the world to both of us, but especially Rick, who had suffered a stroke and was feeling very down. Rick played for him 38 years before that and I played 23, but he took the time to visit and give us a pep talk. He also made sure that we were able to attend the 50th anniversary of football celebration. There are many stories that illustrate his greatness, and through them, he will live on. Rest in Peace Coach!

Mr. Kenney was a blessed inspiration to all those who had the pleasure of knowing him. I will forever remember how he guided my 4 children when they attended PCS especially my son, Chris.
In Chris's junior year of high school, Jack called me one evening and asked my permission if he could take Chris to visit some colleges. I felt such a heartfelt appreciation he would do this for my son. We all know football was Jack's fondest sport but he never pushed that unto Chris but guided him to make his own decision of what he wanted to do with his education and life after high school.
My sincere sympathy to the Kenney family.

I'll never forget Mr. Keeney as Coach who taught both on and off the field. In game and in life, he served as a trusted mentor. Coach taught me life values that will forever be embodied in his indelible words - words I still rely on today. If you played football for Coach Keeney, you know the words I'm talking about. I didn't always understand those words then, but I've been learning their meaning in my life.
First, there was the pregame prayer. "Let us pray. Pray each in your own way." Accept others as they are, work together, and use your differences as strengths. "Pray not to win, for God willing you shall." It's not success that matters – it's the effort. Success comes to those who do the best they can. "Pray that not a man on either team is injured." Sportsmanship is more important than the sport.
Then there were the Coachisms. "God gave you hands for two reasons: prayer and football." There is a purpose for everything, especially for you. "If you make a mistake, do it at 100%." Failure is OK. Even when you fail, if you work hard, good things happen. And, most important, there was Coach's life and the example he set. Do the best you can and work to positively impact others.
Coach had an enormous impact on me and shaped who I became. For that I thank you, Coach Keeney. Coach may be gone, but his presence in those he touched will always live on. You'll always be in my memory and part of my life.

When Jack and I started at Panama the beginning salary was $4,800 per year so we both knew poverty. Jack was a very good teller of stories whether to motivate a sports team or a humorous joke told just for laughs. I have often used a joke that Jack told me. It has been my favorite joke of all times.
This showed Jack's wonderful humorous side. He will be missed.

Coach! Few truly understood the depth of our relationship. From 6th grade track manager to life health situations, you have been there for me. It is obvious that we shared a lifelong love of 'the game', but leadership, knowledge of right from wrong, giving your best and loving your family are just a few of the life skills you gave to all the people whose lives you have touched. Thank you for being a mentor, teacher, coach and lifelong friend. Finally, thank you for showing us how to live and love the final days of your life with courage, faith and love. You have been an amazing example!
Mary, Mike and Kris - Thank you for sharing your husband and dad with me for all these years and please know how much each of you means to me. My prayers, thoughts and love continue to be sent your way.
Please allow me to post one of the many things I will never forget that Coach Keeney would share with us before going into battle...
Panther Prayer
Let us pray. Pray each in your own way, pray not to win, for God willing we shall. Pray that you will give 100% of yourself today; pray that not a man on either football team is injured. Thank God you have had the chance to play football for Panama; because I thank God he has allowed me to coach you. Good luck, God Bless and I love you guys.

Mr. Keeney was one of those educators who made all students believe in their school and in what they were doing. You could not help but see that he had a direction for his work and goals to be met. He made a very owerful impact on the student body. The Keeney family is, I am quite sure, thankful for his guiding hand over many decades. Deep peace to all!

One of the few advantages of growing older is the perspective gained through all of life's experiences. Most of us have but a handful of truly memorable mentors and/or role models. Reading the other entries on these pages makes me believe that Jack was on the short list of important mentors for tens-if not hundreds-of people. So hard to put my thoughts into words....there are so many. It goes without saying that our friendship was special. To know the phone will never ring again for me to hear "Palmer, Keeney" pains me. We certainly solved a lot of problems over coffee over the years...or at least we thought we did. Our passion for Panama and the Yankees was our common thread. Through the years we were blessed to continue our friendship as a foursome....Bill and Mary put up with a lot of sporting events. We had some great trips...to NYC, Toronto, Cleveland, Buffalo, Philly (thanks Paul for that Army/Navy weekend)and those were really great times with great memories. For me, your legacy includes:
1) organization...the most organized person I ever knew
2) obsessively early...I'm sure you drove around Blockville a few times knowing I wouldn't be ready
3) an avid reader
4) loyalty.....you will bleed Panama blue forever
5) you were always black and white in your thinking....no gray in you. Everyone always knew where you stood, even when you disagreed with them.
6) tremendous leader and motivator...I cannot count how many times you came up with some corny idea to use as a motivation tool that would make me roll my eyes but more often than not it worked. Your zest for life made your illness and suffering very hard to watch. Although your death has been hard on your family and friends, it is comforting to know you are in a better place and at peace now. God bless, my friend.

Thirty three years ago, Panama Central School finally had a girls track team, and Mr. Keeney was the coach. It was the only sports team I joined during my school years, but I am still running for fun and exercise 33 years later. I recall my senior year of running which was not going well because my head was not in the game. Mr. Keeney was the only one who seemed to understand that a sport was not just physical but mental, too. Due to his support and understanding, I did manage to run my fastest mile time before I graduated from Panama. I believe since I left Panama with a positive attitude towards running thanks to Mr. Keeney's understanding and support during my low time, I am still running 33 years later! Thank you to an awesome man! Condolescences to Mr. Keeney's family during your time of loss!

I remember fondly staying with Jack, Tommy and their Mom & Dad during the summer of 1955. One of my many memories of the summers that I spent with them was walking with Jack to the football Field for his first practice.

I knew Jack through my father Dick Noonan former teacher and coach at Jamestown. I remember meeting Jack when I played football for JHS and we had to play Panama as I was a sophomore. My dad always spoke highly of Jack as person, teacher and coach. I felt that I personally knew him. My thoughts and prayers are the family.

I knew Jack in a number of ways. First He coached football the first year he came to Panama and I played 3 years under him. He helped me get into Cortland College. I was a teacher at Ripley and coached football for ten years and remember coaching against him each year. Then a few years later he invited me into a business with a number of other coaches in the county.
Jack was a great mentor and a good friend always willing to help in any way he could. I remember spending time at his house after football season watching films of games and his wife Mary providing food for 40 hunger football players.
Jack, you will be missed by many, many people.

Mr. Keeney was an incredible man and teacher. Everyone knows about his coaching. Mr. Keeney coached me on varsity swimming. I remember sophomore year after our team had a very disappointing performance. The next practice, Mr. Pearson and Mr. Keeney drilled us. They stood over us the entire practice ensuring that we did not take extra rest. It was THE hardest practice in my four years. But, it was also the most important practice. That practice broke me through my plateau and I dropped my time three seconds the next meet. That time drop opened the doors for the tremendous success I had in my swim career.
More importantly to me is the way Mr. Keeney treated me as a person. During my years as a student, but also the years after graduation, Mr. Keeney ALWAYS took a minute (or many more when he had free time) to talk with me. He didn't just give me the superficial "How are you?" conversations. He asked about me. He really cared about me and my life. That is what stands out to me the most. He did his job, but he took the time to learn about me as a person. Thank you for that Mr. Keeney.
To your family, I hope my story, and I read Al Roller's also, give you tremendous comfort during this time. Mr. Keeney impacted so many people in such a tremendous way. We are sorry to hear of his passing. But, he is in Heaven now, and there is no better place to be.

Mr. Keeney everyone knows about your football coaching and all you did for sports but some may not know how you helped students outside of athletics. I was deathly afraid of water and I explained to you how I almost drowned in a pool in the winter time. When pool class came you were patient with me and never forced me into the deep end of the pool. For two years you watched me and knew I could swim in the shallow end. Then one day you told me its time I had to pass the swimming test . I was shaking in fear as the class steped up to the edge of deep end. One by one everyone went. Then my turn came , I could not do it. So everyone went and you came back to me. In front of the whole class ( which is a vivid memory) with your legs crossed holding a life guard ring , you said if I jump in you would through that ring to me. With my classmates cheering me on and having total trust you would save me I jumped! When I came up you were holding the life guard ring and asked me if I still wanted it. With a smile while treading water I said no and you told me to swim to the side of pool. That day you helped me conquer a fear that I thought was not possible. I don't think I ever told you thanks but my smile said enough . You told me that you were proud of me and ill never forget that day that changed my life forever. Thank you
