Obituary of Dr. Frederick A. Howard
Dr. Frederick Allen Howard, 87, died Friday May 31, 2013 at his farmhouse, 2598 Horton Road.
He was born August 24, 1925 in Portland, NY, a son of the late Allen and Mabel Mawhir Howard.
He was a 1943 graduate of Brocton Central School where he lettered in basketball, played trumpet in the band and received the American Legion Award for outstanding scholastic and character achievement.
Immediately following graduation he joined the US Army Air Corps. During WWII he served in the European Theatre as a 2nd Lieutenant and navigator on the B26 Martin Marauder in the 9th Air Force, 394th Bomb Group, Squadron #526. He survived 45 bombing missions and was honorably discharged from the service in 1946.
He graduated from Alfred University Extension and later from Houghton College with a degree in chemistry and math. In the fall of 1951 he entered Case Western Reserve School of Dental Medicine, Cleveland, OH and graduated in 1955.
Dr, Howard practiced family dentistry in Jamestown from 1955-98 retiring after 43 years of joyfully fulfilling dedication to the skill and integrity of his profession. Three generations of many families were part of his practice.
He is a life member of the American Dental Association, New York State Dental Association 8th District and the Jamestown Dental Society.
As a member of Bethel Baptist Church for over 50 years, he was and is a long term member of the deacon board, chairman of the finance committee, chairman of the original building committee, Sunday school teacher for junior boys and chief ranger for the junior group of Boys Brigade.
Dr. Howard has been a passionate supporter of Bethany Baptist Camp for many years. He served as chairman of the board and finance committee. He, along with Rev. Warren Lewis, was a driving force for the planning and establishment of the new camp site in Ellington.
Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Frances Ann Louise Holmstrom Howard, whom he married July 24, 1949; three daughters Christine Ann (Jerry) Skinner of Cincinnati, OH, Brenda Kay (Rich) Corbett of Cincinnati, OH and Ann-Louise (Gary) Gerber of Atlanta, GA; a daughter-in-law Lynda Howard of Bemus Point 10 grandchildren David Skinner, Benjamin (Emily) Skinner, Madison (Nathan) Kling and Taylor Corbett all of Cincinnati, Dr. Katelyn (Dr. Drew) Oostra of Columbus, OH, Jessica Gerber and Sarah Gerber, both of Atlanta, Dr. Justin (Katie) Howard of Minneapolis, MN, Dr. Aaron (Lauren) Howard of Chicago, IL and Jackie Howard of Philadelphia, PA and 2 great grandchildren Madelyn Joy Howard and Evan Mark Howard both of Minneapolis.
He was preceded in death his son and partner Dr. Mark A. Howard October 9, 1996.
The funeral will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Bethel Baptist Church. Rev. James Read will officiate.
Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, Portland, NY where a committal service and military honors will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday.
Friends will be received from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday in the Bethel Baptist Church.
