Obituary of M. Irene Hallberg

M. Irene Hallberg, 91, formerly of 5049 Maple Springs-Ellery Road, Bemus Point, died at 3:50 a.m. Tuesday, November 19, 2013 at Heritage Village Rehab & Skilled Nursing. She was the widow of Charles T. Hallberg whom she married September 10, 1941 and who died March 24, 2009. Irene was born June 17, 1922 in the Town of Ellery, a daughter of the late Clyde P. and Marjorie Casselman Stowell, and graduated in 1941from Bemus Point High School. For 20 years she had been employed seasonally at the former Whiteside Hotel in Maple Springs. Irene also worked as an aide in the Kindergarten class of Bemus Point Elementary School for 5 years and in the nursery schools of Bemus Point United Methodist Church and Fluvanna Community Church for 13 years. She was a member of the Jamestown Church of Christ, the West Ellery Jolly Workers Ladies Aid and was a charter member of the Maple Springs Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary. Irene and her late husband, Charles, also organized the Bemus Point 50+ Alumni association. Surviving are two sons, Dennis C. (Karen) Hallberg of Loveland, CO and Larry D. (Virginia) Hallberg of Bemus Point; three grandchildren: Jennifer D. Hallberg of Tampa, FL, Chad G. Hallberg of Bemus Point and Ashley M. (Kevin) McDowell of Mooresville, NC; two great-grandsons, Blake G. and Cody L. McDowell; a sister, Onalee Hawley of Bemus Point; and two brothers, Glenwood Stowell of Brockport, NY and Maurice Stowell of Bemus Point. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Tyler M. McDowell and a brother, Donald Stowell. The funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday in the Lind Funeral Home. Pastor Samuel Shreffler will officiate. Burial will be in Bemus Point Cemetery. Friends will be received from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home.
