Obituary of John D. Smith

John D. "J.D." Smith, 66, of 14 Chambers Street, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday, January 8, 2014. He was at home with his family and died peacefully in his sleep. He was born December 26, 1947, in Jamestown, the son of the late Milo M. Smith and Pansy May Reed Smith. He was a graduate of Panama Central School. He was a 12 veteran of the US Navy serving from 1967-79 Prior to his retirement he was employed by Jamestown Public Schools as a custodian for 25 years. J.D. was an avid musician/songwriter and led worship at his church, Zion Tabernacle. Surviving are his wife of 15 years Chloe Smith; children Alison Smith of Sherman, NY and Amanda Wilson, Sydney Smith, Justus Smith and John Smith, Jr. all of Jamestown; a grandson Joshua Wilson of Ashville; a brother William (Patricia) Smith of Ashville; a sister-in-law Maria Smith of Jamestown and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers James Smith, Arthur Smith, Milo Smith, Jr. and Thomas Smith and two sisters Betty Smith and Ann Smith. The funeral will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday in Zion Tabernacle. Rev. Robert E. Reeves will officiate. Burial will be in Blockville Union Cemetery. Friends will be received from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. Tuesday in the church which is handicapped accessible. Memorials may be made to Zion Tabernacle, 142 Foote Avenue, Jamestown, NY 14701.
