Obituary of Ruth E. Slagle

Ruth E. Slagle, 90, formerly of 4434 Bemus-Ellery Road, Bemus Point, passed away Saturday, January 11, 2014 at the Lutheran Home & Rehabilitation Center. She was the widow of Earl L. Slagle, Jr., whom she married May 7, 1943 and who died May 22, 2007. Ruth was born January 30, 1923 in Warren, Pa., one of ten children of the late Anton and Ida Schauers Speas. In earlier years, she was employed by National Worsted Mills and later retired from the Chautauqua Hardware Corp. She had also been active in the DAV and American Legion Auxiliary. Ruth loved being a mother and homemaker. She enjoyed knitting, crafts, crocheting and canning. Surviving are two sons: Rickey L. Slagle of Syracuse, NY and Ronald L. (Debbie) Slagle of Jamestown; two daughters: Norma J.(Larry) Marvell of Frewsburg and Susan M. Robbins of Falconer; eleven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; three sisters: Margaret Johnson of Cochranton, PA, Delores Bloomquist of Falconer and Joyce Franks of Conewango Valley; and a brother, Robert Speas of Ellington. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Linda Slagle; three sisters: Cecilia Chambers, Helen Madonia and Doris Marsh; and two brothers: Albert and William Speas. The funeral will be held at 1:00 Wednesday in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. Daniel S. Rumfelt will officiate. Burial will be in Bemus Point Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, and for one hour prior to the service Wednesday in the funeral home.
