Obituary of Walter C. Curry
Walter C. Curry, 89, of 14 Harris Ave. Jamestown, went home to be with his Lord Saturday March 1, 2014.
He was born July 9, 1924 in LaJose, PA the son of the late Harold E. and Olive Young Curry.
Walter met Eleanor Hunter in 1942 and they were married on March 6, 1943 in Niagara Falls, NY. Later that year, Walter was drafted into the US Army, serving under General Patton for two years during WWII, stationed in Belgium and France. Following his discharge, Walter and Eleanor moved to Jamestown where he was offered a job at Jacobson's Dairy, working there for several years. He then went to work for Jamestown Laminating until his retirement in 1986.
Walter and Eleanor joined Bethel Baptist Church November 5, 1950 and are the oldest current members. He was a deacon for several years, served as the head of the Arrangements Committee, participated in the music ministry of the church in both choir and specials, and he and his wife cleaned the church for several years. They extended hospitality to visiting pastors and missionaries as well as providing transportation for the young people on special outings of the church. In recognition of his many years of faithful service to the Lord Jesus Christ and to Bethel Baptist Church, Walter was presented the 2005 Barnabas Award for service from the church.
For 18 years, Walter and Eleanor resided at Maranatha Village, a Christian community in Sebring, FL. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping.
Surviving besides his wife of over 70 years, are three daughters, Diana (Jim) Lowery of Souderton, PA; Barbara (Jim) Poppleton of Mills River, NC; Carolyn Curry of Jamestown; three grandchildren, Kellie Baity, Kimberley Woods, and Kerri Bailey; 11 great grandchildren, Lauren Camp, Lindsey Poppleton, Leah Ross, Rachel Baity, Felicia Bailey, Makayla Bailey, Malea Bailey, Jessica Woods, Justine Brooks, David Woods Jr., and Becca Woods-Montoya.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, William Curry.
The funeral service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in Bethel Baptist Church. The Rev. James Read, pastor will officiate.
The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service Tuesday in the church.
Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery.
