I sang with Paul in the Chautauqua Chamber Singers under the original director Larry (forget last name). Paul was such a kind, caring and friendly person. I am sorry to hear he is gone. May your memories of him be a blessing for you.

I'm so glad that we had a person like Paul to bring such wonderful and unusual movies to Jamestown. We never would have had the opportunity to see any foreign films or "unusual" films if it hadn't been for Paul. I really appreciated having a movie theater downtown. My deepest sympathy to Paul's family. He will be missed.

How fortunate we are to have know Paul! Ruth knew him first as "Mr. Schmidt" when she had him as a Social Studies teacher at JHS, then as "Paul" when she had the opportunity to be in Chautauqua Chamber Singers, then finally, as Andy's dad when Andy became the Choir Director at St. Lukes Episcopal Church. We will always remember Paul's ready smile, his genuine warmth, and just overall, as a nice guy. All in all, that's quite a lovely legacy.

To my good friends Andy and Billy, and to Merrillie and the extended Schmidt family, please let me convey my heartfelt sympathy for your loss. I have vivid and pleasant memories of the many visits and sleepovers I spent at the Schmidt home, where Paul would help us erect tents for campouts in the backyard, take us for boating trips on the “No Jelly”, serve us “Tastee Pop” popcorn (the Cinema’s special recipe), help us with our Cub Scout projects, and allow us to occasionally use the family stereo to listen to Sonny and Cher records. There was never any doubt that Paul was first and foremost a teacher, and I can remember how much time he patiently spent with Andy and Billy, teaching them everything from electrical wiring to basic carpentry, from film criticism to how to build their own speakers and amps for their garage bands. I will never forget the closeness and special bond between our parents and families, especially the early years when we all worshipped at St Mark’s together. And how can anyone who grew up in Chautauqua ever forget the cultural gifts that Paul and his father and now Billy have given to generations of Chautauquans through the continued operation of the Cinema? Andy, my friend, I am so sorry that I cannot be there in person, but please know that you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. Goodbye Paul, you had a great run!

For decades we looked to Paul for "cinema" expertise and great conversation at the Lenna, Chautauqua, or anywhere we saw him.
He was not just "uniplex," he was "one of a kind."
Our condolences to all the family.

Please accept my deepest sympathy for I too know the pain of losing someone you love. May your family find comfort as I have in knowing that our loving heavenly Father promises us that very soon he will 'swallow up death forever, and wipe away the tears from all faces.' (Isaiah 25:8) What a wonderful day that will be!

To the Schmidt Family: I'm sorry for your loss; stay strong, I know you will.
I worked at NYSUT for 26 years, many of which were in the Dow House. When JTA struck in the 70's, crisis center was in our lower level. We got to know many of the Teachers Association officers, Karapontso and Harte in leadership positions. Paul was a very nice man.

I knew Paul first as the father of Meri, one of his employees at the Cinema.
I have fond memories of being his roommate on the Chautauqua trip to the Republic of Georgia. before the fall of the Soviet Union.
My wife and I enjoyed many boat trips on the Lake with Merilee and Paul.

I am so glad I was able to tell Paul how much going to the movies at Chautauqua meant to me growing up. The Schmidt family chose movies that I never would have seen in my small home town and I grew up loving movies from all over the world. I will think of him and the whole Schmidt family every time I look from my porch on McClintock up to the Chautauqua Cinema.

The Chautauqua Cinema under Paul's leadership was inspirational to me. He gave me great advice and 13 years ago I launched a successful Film Society in my community. We now have over 600 members, and I have always been grateful to Paul for his help.
He always seemed genuinely interested in whether or not I liked the film, and what did I think of it. His son is doing a great job. It's a lasting legacy to a sensitive man. All Chautauqua movie goers will cherish his memory.

Thanks, Paul, for the many years of movie memories made at the Chautauqua Cinema, especially the classic and cutting edge films. Thanks also for the gift of your son Andrew, our much-loved organist at St Luke's in Jamestown! Be at peace!

My deepest sympathies to my friend Billy, his family, my music teacher Merrillee, and Andrew. The Schmidt's are primarily responsible for my deep understanding and love of music and theatre. What a privilege it was to know Paul. I always saw him as the quiet guy next to the effervescent Merrillee - not to say that he didn't hold his own in conversation. Paul was always quick to smile and quick to add his knowledge and wit to the discussion. I'm so sorry to hear the news of his passing.

To the entire Schmidt family, my thoughts and prayers are with you. I want you to know Paul was a teacher who made a difference, who had a passion for his work, who presented the material in an interesting, but fun way. He was awesome and will be sadly missed. May he have eternal rest in heaven. May the peace of Christ be with you all. Mark Messina, JHS class of '75
