I was privileged to know Bob both as a teacher and a co-worker. When I returned to college as an adult in 1984, I was required to take English Lit for my degree, and Bob was my teacher. What a delight! I can still remember much of his first day lecture as well as many highlights from the class. He could turn a phrase like no other: referring to reading literature we think we may not like, he said, "You may think to yourself, 'eeew, bad news buffet,' but try it anyway." One of the greater compliments I received in my life was when he told me he always left my paper(s) at the bottom of the pile so he had something to look forward to. When I joined the JCC staff in 1984, Bob became a colleague and, delightfully, a frequent companion in the faculty dining room. (I was staff, not faculty). One of the conversations I remember vividly was when Bob had just acquired his plot at Lake View Cemetery. He was describing how it was on a hill, no, not a hill, but a knob. So he quipped he'll be Bob on the knob, which was followed in rapid-fire, around the lunch table, by "I'll visit Bob on the knob and eat corn on the cob!," and "I'll quit my job so I can be with Bob on the knob eating corn on the cob" - well, you get the idea. When he went on a diet to lose weight for his first hip replacement, I complimented him on his svelteness. He replied, "Oh, honey, the first 100 pounds are easy!" His rapid weight loss enabled him to bring things out of the closet that hadn't been seen in a while, and when he appeared in a leisure suit, John Heister asked, "When we see you in the Nehru jacket, can we assume you've reached goal?"
The tragedy of his loss is compounded by the fact that there is no longer anyone at JCC who knows how much of what they enjoy there was made possible by Bob. I take comfort knowing that he and Maxie and Joan Patrie are reunited. He was a giant among men, and will always be a treasured memory for me. And Yes, Bob, I will visit you on the knob.

Dear friend. We miss you. It seems hard to believe that you are no longer with us. We will miss our conversations and meals at your lovely home. We will also miss our conversations about our beloved pets and your caring and concern for pets less fortunate. I enjoyed first meeting you while serving on the Humane Society Board and then continuing years after. Your contributions to this community were huge. We miss you.

Bob was probably the single most influential person in my education and development as a student at JCC (1966-68)and beyond. He is the only college professor with whom I remained in contact, and my wife and I visited him just this past July. He seemed optimistic at the time that he would be getting better, and we had hope in that regard.
Bob fostered the humanist spirit within me and inspired a life-long love of literature and language. He was a great friend and model, and without his influence, I probably would not have transferred to UB to finish my education. Those were turbulent times in the Vietnam era, and without his guidance, I might have succumbed to the despair I felt over the war piled on top of the normal angst that a 20-year-old will suffer. I am grateful to Bob for all he was and did and very saddened that we will not meet again.
I do know that Bob affected many people that way, and I consider him one of the great liberal arts educators of our time. He will be greatly missed.

I met Bob in the Fall of 1968 when I was an apprehensive and unassured freshman at JCC. Bob was one of several magnificent people who challenged me and expressed confidence in me to help me grow in many ways that extended beyond the academic realm. I will be forever grateful.

I first met Bob when I was a beginning student at JCC in the Fall of 1967. He was my English professor and opened my life to new ideas and to the love of English and College in general. Bob was an extraordinary teacher and person. He was so knowledgeable and excited about life in general. I looked forward to his class and to our talks about anything that we wanted to talk about. He was always available to the students and gave of himself completely. What a wonderful man, I am so glad I had the opportunity to know him and become his friend. He encouraged me to teach and I thank him for that as I also loved teaching. The world was a better place with Bob Hagstrom in it. My condolences to his family and friends. He will be missed.

I have many fond memories of Bob when I was a student at JCC in the late 1970's. My first trip to London was with Bob and friends for the London Theater Tour. What a great experience for a young person to be able to have, and I am so grateful to Bob for creating and orchestrating this program for the students at JCC. Bob was so interesting and fun to be with. My deepest condolences to his family and friends. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
