Obituary of John F. Davis
John F. "Jack" Davis, 99, of 11 Whitehill Ave. Jamestown, passed away at 5:30 p.m. Friday, October 24, 2014, in his home.
A lifelong area resident, he was born August 12, 1915 in Jamestown, NY, a son of the late John Franklin and Anna Bauer Davis, Sr. The Davis family has resided in Jamestown since 1860.
Jack was a 1934 graduate of Jamestown High School and was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II. During his tour of duty he received two bronze stars for his participation in the Pacific Theater and the Philippine Liberation as a Tech Sergeant in aircraft identification recognition.
He was a lifelong member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church and was very active in area Masonic circles. He was a longtime member of the Mt. Moriah Lodge # 145 Free and Accepted Masons and was inducted into the Masonic Hall of Fame in 1976.
Jack was an avid skeet shooter and hunter. He also had a passion for sailing, having raced e- scows and flown a piper cub.
Before his retirement in 1980, he had owned the E.J. Ashwell and Company Insurance Agency, with his brother Stanly Davis. In earlier years he had worked for the former Empire Case Goods, Inc. where he purchased lumber and worked in the Superintendant's office.
Surviving is a son, Scott A. (Becky) Davis of Jamestown, a niece, Barbara Lannoy and two nephews, Raoul and Guy Lannoy all of Antwerp, Belgium.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his wife the former Ruth Peterson Davis whom he married March 20, 1948 and who died May 11, 2013 and two brothers, Bauer Davis who died March 30, 1997 and Stanley Davis who died December 8, 2003.
A graveside service and a Masonic funeral service will be held at a later date and time to be announced by the Lind Funeral Home. Visitation will not be observed. Inurnment will be in the Lake View Cemetery.
The family suggests that memorials in Jack's name be made to the Mt. Moriah Lodge # 145, 3485 Baker St. Ext., Jamestown, NY 14701.
