Obituary of R. Fenton Gustafson
R. Fenton Gustafson, 92, of Ashville, NY passed away Monday February 9, 2015 in his home.
He was born December 4, 1922 in Jamestown the son of the late Richard Carl Nathaniel and Rose Elizabeth Norton Gustafson.
Fenton was a graduate of Jamestown High School and served as a submariner in the US Navy during WWII.
He began his career as a toolmaker at Rane Tool Co. and retired as vice president and chief engineer of Falconer Metal Specialties.
He was a lifelong member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, a former member of the Lakewood Rod and Gun Club and a 50+ year member of the Vikings. In earlier years, he enjoyed golf and in later years, fly fishing and hiking with his constant companion, his dog. Fenton was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, delivering meals into his 90's.
Surviving are two sons, Steven (Sandra J.) Gustafson, Neal (Leah) Gustafson both of Lakewood; two daughters, Marcia Metcalfe (Richard Buchheimer) of Elmira, NY; Viking Gustafson (Donald King) of Winthrop, MA; 10 grandchildren, Erik, Chad, Tyler, Reid Gustafson; Ted (Carly Mahany), Scott, Claire, Sarah Metcalfe; Erin, Tiffany Skinner; a great grandson, Levi Cotton; and former son in law, Charles Metcalfe.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Carlson Gustafson whom he married April 3, 1948 and who died November 9, 1993; a brother Maurice Gustafson; and a sister Lorraine Streed.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in St Luke's Episcopal Church. The Rev. Luke Fodor, Rector will officiate.
Entombment will be in St Luke's Columbarium.
A reception for friends and family will follow the service in the undercroft of the church.
