My father, Walt Colburn, who coached Rick in the 1950's, used to wonder at Rick Brown’s grit. He was “just a skinny little kid.” Rick would ask, “Coach, what should I do?” My father was almost afraid to tell him what the coaching textbook describes, out of a well founded fear that he would actually do it. He would. Why he didn’t get injured, my father didn’t know. My father had himself been too small to play football, but he did, and he played it well. So did Rick.
I remember the days at work at Chautauqua Rick would come to me and say, “Shall we go to Ma’s?” Ma’s Pies was a little greasy elbow-counter restaurant a mile or two east of the Institute on 394. It was manned by a couple, probably the owners—"Ma," who waited on customers and a man, undoubtedly her husband, who tended the grill. We would get open faced roast beef sandwiches for lunch.
We were both amused by the relationship between Ma and the cook. She openly abused the taciturn man, reviling him in front of the customers for one perceived shortcoming or another.
Rick would recount stories from his life as a coach at Southwestern or from his present summer position as waterfront director at the Boys’ and Girls’ Club. He had a distinctive way of narrating an internal monologue that would orient him toward an unsettling condition requiring his supervision. He’d come upon a situation requiring his intervention and say to himself, “Ooooh-kay,” the verbal expression of his mental process of summing up the conditions he would have to deal with. His narrative would follow.

Rita, Rebecca, Randy and families-
I truly have been blessed to have been able to get to know Rick over the past 6 years. Everyday that Rick and Rita would come to the Diamond for breakfast was the highlight of my day. The stories he shared of his wonderful family-the golfing tips he always provided, the concerns over the staff perhaps maybe stabbing their hand with the guest check holder, his sense of humor and most of all his smile and laughter is what I will miss. Rick was a wonderful husband to Rita and well trained by her in deed and a proud father always wearing their college sweatshirts proudly and smiles from ear to ear talking about his grandchildren. In Ricks final days , I visited him at the house and even then I received a smile from him.
Rick thank you for touching the lives in so many people. You will sadly be missed!

Farewell, Rick:
As I think of your passing, Adlai Stevenson's eulogy for a friend seems appropriate:
, "I think it will always be April in our memory of him. It will always be a bright, fresh day full of the infinite vanity and the promise of new life. Perhaps nothing has gone at all. Perhaps only the embodiment of the thing tender, precious to us all - a friendship that is immortal and doesn't pass along. It will always be revived for me as I know for each of you each spring."
And it will be revived for me whenever I think of our times on the Weiler tennis court or at the Y, or during the winter playing on the outdoor platform tennis court. You were always the competitor, but always the gentleman, always the wit.
Now, you have left for greener pastures; a spiritual place where together with Vince Nalbone, you will inspire, cajole and rattle the cages of the angels and the loved ones who have passed on before, and both of you will make them smile and laugh with your recitals of your experiences and stories, as you did to and for your family and the rest of us here on earth.

I am so sorry for your loss. I have so many very fond memories of Mr. Brown from Boy"s & Girl's Club. The funniest being when I had to "save" him from drowning in order to pass Advanced Lifesaving. I was 14 and had a lot of respect for and fear of Mr. Brown. He was BIG and greased up and my passing depended on my being able to get him into a cross body hold and swim him to safety. I had never been so scared in my life but, I saved him and he could not have been nicer about it. As a small child I also loved watching Mr. Brown, Dr. Hill and Mr. Lewellyn play tennis every day during lunch. As I sat on my porch, I was in awe. It was like seeing that Santa Clause actually is a real person! He was loved by so many kids over the years, what a wonderful legacy to leave behind.
