Obituary of Sophie M. Korcyl
Sophie M. Korcyl, 96, of 4554 Bayview Rd. Bemus Point, NY passed away Tuesday, April 21, 2015, in the St. Vincent's Health Center, Erie, PA.
A lifelong are resident, she was born July 28, 1918 in Jamestown, NY a daughter of the late Nicholas and Henrietta Dolowa Evanczik.
She was 1937 graduate of Jamestown High School.
Before her retirement she was employed as a bus driver by the Bemus Point Central School System for many years.
Sophie was a communicant of St. Mary of Lourdes Catholic Church, Bemus Point and was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society. She was an avid reader and loved spending time at the Bemus Point Library. She was also an excellent scrabble player and took great joy in beating her sons- in- law and other family members. In earlier years she loved working in her garden and taking care of her Bayview Road home.
Sophie touched so many people with her faith, optimism and her endurance of life. She enjoyed her friends at the library and at Sandy's Beauty Shop. As a loving and caring mother and grandmother, she always looked forward to the annual Korcyl family reunion where she would spend time with her large family.
Surviving are three daughters, Lorraine S. (Ang) Alaimo of Bemus Point, Suzanne E. (John) Rasmussen of Jamestown, Virginia M. (Larry) Hallberg of Bemus Point, two sons, Edward S. (Rebecca) Korcyl, Gregory J. (Beth) Korcyl both of Bemus Point, 16 grandchildren, Marie C. (Creig) Hebdon of Groton, NY, Renee L. (Patrick) Foote of Dryden, NY, Laurie A. (Howard) Hilsinger of Palmyra, VA, Jennifer L. (Paul) Semo of Clymer, NY, Lisa J. (Tony) Genco of Falconer, NY, Jon R. (Lisa) Rogerson of Falconer, NY, Patrick D. (Julie) Rogerson of Fredonia, NY, Scott J. (Anita) Rasmussen of Phoenix, MD, Mark W. (Debbie) Rasmussen of Pembrook, NH, Danielle C. (Pete) McKnight of Matthews, NC, Ryan T. (Katie) Rambacher of Jamestown, Jordan K. (Ardelle) Rambacher of Bemus Point, Chad G. Hallberg of Bemus Point, Ashley M. (Kevin) McDowell of Mooresville, NC, Thomas M. Korcyl, Jr. of Bemus Point, Amber L. Korcyl of Jamestown, 22 great grandchildren, one great great grandson and a brother, Edward (Anhild) Evanczik of Jamestown.
Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley J. Korcyl whom she married June 8, 1940 and who died January 3, 1998, two daughters, Janice K. Rogerson who died December 23, 2010, Marcia F. Rambacher who died February 3, 2015, a son, Thomas M. Korcyl, Sr. who died November 11, 2013, a great grandson, Tyler M. McDowell, a sister, Francis Evanczik and four brothers, Mitchell, Joseph, Steven, and John Evanczik.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2:00 p.m. Saturday in St. Mary of Lourdes Catholic Church, Bemus Point. The Rev. Todd Remick, pastor will be celebrant. Burial will be in the Sunset Hill Cemetery.
Friends will be received from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Friday in the Lind Funeral Home where a Christian Wake Service will be held at 1:45 p.m. Friday.
