Dear Jane, I still find it hard to believe that our Good Lord would take one of the finest, kindest, gentlest, brightest, loveliest, and happiest woman at such a young age. Although we are coasts apart, it seems like only yesterday that we were colleagues for so many years, planned your wedding, visited you in the hospital when Jessica was born, and continued our friendship for all the years while I live in Arizona. I know you have many admiring friends, and I am proud to have been one of them. I will sadly miss you.

Jane was my best friend ever since junior high. At our weddings she was my maid of honor I was her matron of honor, So, my memories are many and deep as we shared all secrets, hopes and dreams for decades. For some reason I want to share these two memories from high school: I remember Jo being so funny and teasing us about the Beatles, I remember how Tosh snorted under the dining room table! And boys... oh, the boys.... I have known Janie in all her colors and moods in good times and bad. I cried for three months straight when I feared I would lose her. But not Jane! She battled cancer and helped others do the same. I could not be there for Jessica and Jo today, so I worked all week to translate an Irish lament in homage to her.
After an Irish Lamentation, 1825
Your beauty infatuated, your smile lifted hearts
enchanted by the soft music of your voice.
When your sun set, a darkness came, mute,
for grief has not yet tears enough to shed for you.
An awful silence prevails. Gone is the voice
of my oldest friend. Only we are left, the many
who gather here to mourn your fate, to keen
lamentations of woe and disbelief.
You did not fall like a withered leaf, which hangs
trembling and insecure: no, it was a rude blast
which brought you to this moment, O friend!
We will celebrate your life, your virtues recall.
Kindhearted, your generosity spread;
your charity, your hope, and love remain
in all four corners of the world you walked;
Not to fade from memory, but live on.
The Spoiler came, disordered peace:
The grim tyrant took away the peerless Jane,
prevailed, despite our protest, sorrows, tears.
Past our despair remembrance will remain.
For some, recall fades quickly, not so for those
who sing the praise of Jane Ann Winter.
And so falls into the depth of silence my lament
for beloved Jane, mother, daughter, friend.

Dearest Jane,
I do not know where to begin expressing the huge whole in my heart from the loss of such a dear friend. I cannot believe that I will never see your beautiful smile, hear your calming voice and be surrounded by your gentle spirit.
I almost telephoned you last week and now I am so sad that I did not. I have never known anyone that is as loving, compassionate, strong, caring, intelligent, inspiring and admirable as you. As you know Jessica is just like you. What a wonderful daughter you have raised. She is being so strong for us all when her heart is so broken -- "like mother -- like daughter".
Your family, friends and community will miss you so. You have left us with much love and many beautiful memories. Rest in peace my dear friend with lots of love always! Charlotte

I remember the meetings at the Marvin House. Jane always wore a smile. I remember the morning breakfast club, the day at the radio station, and our Inter Club Council meetings, she left some big shoes to fill. Jane Winters was definitely a role model. I will miss her, but the memory of her smile will live on.

It has been a few years since our paths had crossed but I always knew that you were out there impacting people with your love. Thank you for bringing such a wonderful woman into this world. Without you I would never know one of my very dearest friends. You will certainly be missed but your spirit lives on in Jessica and in others who you have impacted so fully. Thank you for your constant positivity and strength. Thank you for making this world a better place. Thank you for continuing to smile down on all of us!

Its with deep regret that I am writing this. Jane was a one of a kind person always caring for other people. When growing up in Bemus Point and attending school we were very close friends always hanging out at Traynor's after school having sleep overs at our homes,always going over our Beetles collection as to who had what. I will never forget those days and memories. Over the years we lost touch as I moved to Florida shortly after graduating from nursing but you were never forgotten. Only recently did we connect on facebook again. May you rest in peace and know that you will always be loved.

Jane has been a life long friend. We grew up two blocks from the other and her dad, Paul Winter, was our bus driver to the Bemus Point Elementary School where I first got to know Janie in kindergarten. Jane was maid of honor when I married another of Jane's closest friends, Dianne McDonnell. Over the years we all witnessed Jane's devotion to her beautiful daughter Jessica and to her mother and father. We saw her fret and care for each and every one of her school students. We also stood in awe at the incredible energy she gave to her church and community. I believe Jane to be one of the kindest hearted people I have ever met, a friend to the end. Because I no longer live in the Jamestown area, Jane and I have been correspondents for years keeping active our fun-loving, laugher filled friendship. A year ago Janie sent me a box of pink striped butter cookies from Jone's bakery for Christmas knowing how much I loved them. That was so Jane Winter. She preserved all the lovely traditions and memories shared throughout our lives. Janie, know how very much I treasured our friendship and the years that we were afforded, many more years than at times we thought we might have. You will always occupy a special place in my heart for as long as I live. Next time I'm in Bemus I'll be dropping by the Bemus Point Cemetery to leave you a handful of forget-me-knots. See you in our next life sweetheart. Tim

Jane and I worked together on the yearbook at Maple Grove and were fellow members of Future Teachers of America. My favorite picture of her is in the 1968 Pointer (the Maple Grove yearbook) page 19. She is gazing through a window into a classroom. This is now I will always remember her - gentle, quiet, thoughtful. I moved several states away after high school and lost contact with her (to my regret) so I was impressed reading her obituary of her numerous accomplishments and honors. Shouldn't surprise me, though. She was also intelligent, hard-working and devoted. I will always treasure her memory.

Jane, This candle is lit in recognition of the light and joy that you sparked and enhanced in each person blessed to have known you. Losing you would cause me to question the fairness of life, if it weren't for the God-given life force, so much a part of you, that leaves me with no doubt you will live on in us all. We will try to burn brighter in your honor.
