Gladys Peterson was the greatest, as was her husband, Lyle, the best basketball coach I ever played for. Gladys and her musical sidekick, Sylvia Johnson, took turns playing for my brother Jeff and I when we sang duets and/or solos at Chandler Street Baptist Church in Jamestown during our pre-college years. During our Bethel College years and for many years after that, Jeff and I would return home to Jamestown for the holidays and find a huge container of cookies on the front porch, a gift from Gladys. During the final years of my parents' lives, Gladys was a frequent visitor, whether at our home, the hospital, or at Heritage Park. Gladys also played for me when I sang Olive Dungan's "Eternal Life" at my mom's funeral on September 15, 1999. She was also there for us at my dad's wake and at his funeral on November 15, 2008. Her lifelong display of Christian love and support for our family will never be forgotten.

Tears fell this morning in Maryville, Missouri, whether I wished or even suspected I would have been sobbing. Some of my tears expressed the cosmic joy, yes, that Gladys probably would have wished them all to represent. But, inevitably, I felt a lot of wistful loss, and such stirring memories. She made my family dinner the night after my mom died in 1999. She spent the whole evening with me and my brother at the funeral home when my dad died in 2008. She had played lustrous piano accompaniments for my church solos as long ago as my high school days in 1964, and she accompanied me for songs with which I honored my dad at his 80th birthday party. I had seen her, in recent years, at funeral home visitations and Christmas concerts and at Chautauqua. Always, always, always, she was absolutely lovely--with such a stellar, sweet, supportive, transcendent personality.
I know how much her family, in all its generations, mattered to her--and so I offer you all the most extensive consolations I can send your way. When my dad died, I told a Heritage employee that I and my brother had been "so lucky!" to have him, and I know that all you Peterson descendants were also "so, so lucky!"--to have had her! Blessings and peace! Jeff Loomis

Dan and I were very sorry to hear about Gladys' passing. She is an amazing lady, and we thankfully know she is, as she said, "more alive now than ever"! We can see her in heaven playing a golden grand piano as the men's quartet sings some lively praise music! Gladys will be missed by many, but she will be remembered as she left a lasting mark of betterment on our world. May you all be filled with the Lord's peace, comfort, and strength as you walk through the days and weeks ahead.

To Greg and Family,
You are all in our hearts and prayers. May God wrap His loving arms of comfort and strength around you.
"I know for certain that we never lose the people we love, even to death. They continue to participate in every act, thought and decision we make. Their love leaves an indelible imprint in our memories. We find comfort in knowing that our lives have been enriched by having shared their love." Leo Buscaglia
But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself. Philippians 3:20-21
