Obituary of Millie Hall Nixon
Millie Hall Nixon of Lakewood, NY and Naples, FL, passed away Friday, November 13, 2015, in her home.
She was born in Jamestown, NY to the late Levant Mason and Mildred Griffin Hall. Millie was a graduate of Jamestown High School and Ogontz Junior College in Pennsylvania.
In her earlier days Millie enjoyed spending her time as a Brownie and Girl Scout leader as well as teaching at a local Nursery School. She then worked as a reporter for The Jamestown Post-Journal, which was family owned and operated. Millie also volunteered at the WCA Hospital Snack Shop.
She was a former member of the Warner Home, Moon Brook Country Club, Town Club, WCA Hospital Auxiliary, US Humane Society, and Greenpeace. Millie was a member and past chairperson of the Salvation Army Advisory Board and the Chautauqua County Humane Society. She was also a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Mayville and its Episcopal Women.
Millie will be remembered for her love of animals, especially her kitty's. She spent many years volunteering and being involved in many community projects. Millie lit up any room and her spunk and will be greatly missed.
Surviving are a son Samuel F. Nixon IV of Austin, TX; a daughter Melanie N. (Nathaniel) Reffner of Mayville, NY; a step-daughter Melinda W. (Albert) Jones of New Orleans, LA; four grandchildren David M. Douglas and Heather A. Freeburg of Mayville, Samuel F. Nixon V and Carolyn M. Nixon of Austin, TX; and six great-grandchildren Brandon M. Douglas, Kyle J. Douglas, Gabrielle A., Gage A., Matthew R., and Kalli A. Freeburg.
Besides her parents she was preceded in death by a step-daughter Maria R. Todd of Tulsa, OK, and her husband Samuel Frederick Nixon III, whom she married September 27, 1952.
The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in St. Luke's Episcopal Church. Rev. Luke F. Foder, rector, will officiate.
Entombment will be in Lake View Cemetery.
Friends will be received from 3-5 p.m. Wednesday in the Lind Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to a charity of choice.
