Obituary of Richard M. Johnson
Richard M. Johnson, 90, of 1420 E. Venice Ave., Venice, Fl. passed away on January 25, 2016 in Venice. Mr. Johnson was born in Jamestown, NY on June 14, 1925, the son of Victor and Mary Johnson. He was a 1943 graduate of Jamestown High School..
Dick proudly served as a sergeant in World War II with the 158th Regimental Combat Team in the Pacific Theater. He enlisted in October 1943 and was honorably discharged in January 1946. He was awarded 3 Bronze Service Stars for service in Hollandia, New Guinea, Noemfoor Island, Luzon and Legazpi in the Philippines and also the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star, Combat Infantryman Badge, and a Purple Heart with one Oak Leaf Cluster. He was on a ship bound for Yokohama, Japan when the atom bombs were dropped, and was then based in Utsunomiya as part of the Japanese Occupation.
After his discharge he attended Adelbert College of Western Reserve University, now Case Western Reserve.
He married the former Patricia Ann Newberry on June 26, 1948 in the old First Methodist Church at the juncture of E. Third and E. Second Streets. They had 67 ½ years together.
Dick was employed in Jamestown at the former Art Metal, Inc. as Manager of Sales Service and later at The General Fireproofing Co. in Youngstown, Ohio as Manager of Product Service.
While in Jamestown, Dick was a very active member of the YMCA and their Membership Recruitment Drives. He was also a 66 year member of Ingjald Lodge #65, I.O.V. and the Chi Sigma Chi Fraternity Hourglass Club. He was a lifelong fan of the New York Yankees and Frank Sinatra.
In addition to his wife Patricia, Richard is survived by sons Steven D. (Barbara) of Venice, FL, Gary R. (Debra) of Sarasota, FL, Jeffrey K. (Barbara Haines) of Hubbard, OH, and William M. (Heidi) of Cary, NC., 9 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was pre-deceased by his parents, brothers Carl W. and Roger V., son Ward T., and grandson Chad C.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Chi Sigma Chi Friendship Fund of the Jamestown Community Foundation, 418 Spring St., Jamestown NY 14701, or a charity of choice.
Services will be conducted at Lind Funeral Home, 805 W. Third St., Jamestown, NY on Wednesday, February 10, 2016: Visitation at 10 am, Funeral Service at 11 am.
