Obituary of Carol C. Nord

Carol Fosberg Nord On January 29, 2016, Carol Cecelia (Fosberg) Nord passed away, surrounded by her husband and her children. She was born on September 14, 1932, to Lawrence and Viola Fosberg, in Jamestown, New York. As an only child, Carol had a fun-filled childhood growing up with doting family on each side. She spent time on the Fosberg farms riding horses, caring for chickens, and enjoyed recounting a vivid memory of being chased by an errant bull. Her teen years were spent in Long Beach, California, where she graduated from Long Beach Poly Tech. Judging by the photos, she was a bathing beauty on that beach. When Carol was sixteen, she met Jack (John) at a Jamestown street dance. As he walked her home from that dance, they arranged a date for the next evening. Jack picked her up at the home of her Aunt Ruth and Uncle Dick at 8:30 PM and was told he was to have Carol home by 9:00 PM. It was supposed to be a drive-in movie in Frewsberg. The brevity of that first date did not preclude courtship, and Carol and Jack Nord were united in marriage four years later, in 1952. They celebrated their sixty-third wedding anniversary last April. Carol's children meant the world to her, and they were her priority as they grew. Instilled in each of her children were respect and kindness to others. She always found a way for each one to pursue anything they found interesting. Today, dance, photography, flying jumbo jets, and the love of nature are just a few of those interests in which Carol had encouraged them early on. There wasn't a sunny weekend that went by when she wasn't pulling the basket down to picnic in Alleghany State Park, Midway Park, Long Point or the Sportsman's Club. She had a knack at providing happiness to those around her, and it was her unspoken rule: "The more, the merrier." The hobbies that Carol loved were fashion, decorating her homes, gardening, tennis, and genealogy, all of which she pursued with great panache. Carol made sure that the home décor was an evolution until it reached perfection, and ensured that it was beautiful, gracious, warm, and welcoming. For the genealogy she and her cousin Norman spent many hours tape-recording her Grandpa Eric, who was born in the 1880s. She made many trips to visit her children and quite a few trips to Sweden to visit relatives and to learn about her heritage. Generous with her time, Carol was always there for others. Her family and older neighbors always knew whom to call in time of need, and these many relationships thrived for decades of wisdom and laughter. In her community, Carol served, as president, on the boards of many Jamestown organizations. The list is long, and includes Creche, Mozart Club (the second oldest music club in NY State), W.C.A. Hospital Auxiliary, Warner Home, Norden Women's Club and The Jamestown Garden Club. In 1976 Carol was instrumental in planning a luncheon for the visiting King Carl Gustav of Sweden. This was a daunting task which she pulled off with great skill. She was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church. Carol is survived by her husband, John Alldor Nord; her four children, Daniel (Elizabeth) Nord, Heidi (Gary) Bletsch, Libby Nord, and Andrew L.(Margarita) Nord; and her nine grandchildren: Mia Bletsch, Jacob Nord, Elsa Miller, Sasha Kurashige, Chloe Kurashige, Alexandra Nord, Henry Bletsch, Andrea Nord, and Andrew A. Nord. Carol's two cousins Brenda Wehrenberg and Norman Carlson have always been near and very dear to her heart A special thanks to Patrice Heath, Heritage Park Nursing Home, and Chautauqua County Hospice for making Carol's past year a comfortable and easy one. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 Monday in Bellinger Chapel of First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Robert J. Hagel, pastor will officiate. Inurnment will be in the Lake View Cemetery at a later date. Friends will be received from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Sunday in the Lind Funeral Home.
